Introducing colour
W
p21 e’re huge fans of
bold colour here at
GoodHomes and it’s
probably the easiest way to give
your home the wow factor. This
month we’ve created a gorgeous
decorating scheme on p18
combining two of this autumn’s
key trends – homespun style and
bold boho colour. We’ve also
picked our favourite new lighting
buys on p27 and designed some
stunning room ideas around
p32 them – I love this quirky cutlery
chandelier! And if it’s your dream
to have a house bursting with p30

items and neutral colours remain, while new

East Devon – just five miles from Lyme

When the couple first viewed the
vast Victorian property it had a very
institutional feel, having been owned
by a Christian trust. Period features
had been removed, the layout was
unconventional and the feel throughout
was dated. ‘The house had been used as

What was the biggest
challenge?
‘It was undoubtedly
living on site during the
work. Our two boys were

and for six months our
cooking facilities were
limited to a camping

I used to yearn for the
simple pleasure of being

FINAL WORD
The move to the coast has been a great
success for the Robinsons – whether it’s
gathering round the grand piano of an
evening or hosting Sunday roasts for
family and friends. ‘We’ll often invite
people over at the weekend and chat
as I prepare a meal,’ says Liz. ‘This house
just has such a lovely warm, sunny feel –

Stimson were ready for
a complete change of
lifestyle after years of living in Leeds
and commuting miles to their jobs in
education. ‘We were both teachers and
then went down the management route,
so we were working very long hours and,
although we enjoyed it, it was quite
stressful,’ says Mat. ‘Our lives seemed to
revolve around work and we were ready
for a better work-life balance, which
would give us more time at home – even
if that meant moving house to achieve it.’
So they sold their four-bedroom house

the market and headed for the coast.

memories of family holidays by the sea
in Whitby in North Yorkshire, and after
several visits to the historic fishing port,
they started to look for a property that
would help them create their longed-for
new lifestyle.
‘We agreed that we would like to live
close to water and we found ourselves
increasingly drawn towards Whitby,’ says
Mat. ‘It has a lovely community spirit and
atmosphere and a much slower pace of
life than we had in the city.’
The spacious three-storey Victorian
semi – which is just a short walk through
a leafy park from the town’s bustling
harbour – was one of the first houses
they looked at and they fell for it almost
instantly. ‘It seemed to wrap itself around
us and draw us inside the minute we
walked through the door,’ says Mat.
‘It had been renovated by the previous
owners so all we had to do was put our
own stamp on it, which we could do with
our furniture and accessories. That suited
us both as we spent a year renovating
our last house and didn’t want to start
all over again. We wanted to make life
easier for ourselves, not harder!’

means that if we get

MATERIALS, FINISHES AND

When choosing new technology,

many impressive features it has and
stylish and works in harmony with your home what it can do, but you also need
to think about how it looks. If your
kitchen has all-chrome appliances,
a black chunky fridge-freezer might
not be the best choice. If you want
your new gadget to blend in with
your scheme, go for sleek materials
in glossy finishes. If you’d like to
make more of a statement, choose
a bold shade or accent colour that
is already in use in the room. Before
you bring any new technology into
your home, consider how it will
work with your existing furniture

or select an entertainment unit that
co-ordinates with your furniture.

Clearview Stoves
Since 1987 Clearview has been designing and producing wonderful wood burning
stoves considered by many to be the finest in the world. Their range is entirely
manufactured in Great Britain and consists of nine models with various styles
options, all of which are available in a choice of seven colours.

These highly efficient multi-fuel smoke control stoves produce emissions so low they
can be used for burning wood in smokeless zones. Remarkably easy to light and
producing five times more heat from the same fuel as an open fire, they burn for
long periods unattended, and are so efficient that frequent cleaning is unnecessary.
They are such a joy to use they are often told by their many customers “it’s the best
thing they ever bought for their home”

Their installation, product knowledge and expert advice is unequalled in the industry,
and all backed up by an extensive stock of flue components and accessories.
