1. To meet the energy requirements, various groups have examined micro hydropower plants
because of its advantages of proposing good performance as compared to conventional
fossil fuels.
2. Energy is generated by applying water pressure, to rotate the blades of hydropower
turbines.
3. Available head, specific turbine speed, and water flow are the key factors for the selection
of appropriate turbine type under certain parameters.
4. Crossflow impulse turbine can be used up till for 50m head (max.) and 0.8m3/sec flowrate.
On the contrary, propeller turbine can be for head between 10~70meters.
5. In this study, cross flow impulse turbine is considered as most suitable turbine type under
certain design parameters which includes: low flow rate, low-pressure head, and 63 m/s
specific turbine speed.
6. Moreover, propeller turbine is selected on the basis of medium pressure head, medium flow
rate and 15.18 m/s specific turbine speed.
7. Selection of turbine is projected in terms of kilowatts which is likely to be 4.4 KW for
cross-flow impulse turbine and 18.7 KW for propeller turbine.
8. Any ambiguity in the design parameters for the selection of turbine can cause cavitation in
the penstock which results, decrease in turbine’s efficiency.
9. Furthermore, Frances turbine should have been used instead of propeller turbine but the
major problem was the decrement to the efficiency at the given design conditions.
10. As the purpose of this study is primarily the selection of turbine under specific design
parameters, however turbine’s efficiency cannot be ignored.
11. As for micro hydel turbine the required pressure head is below 10 meters, so after the
completion of our literature review, assumptions and calculations we have decided that
cross flow impulse turbine is suitable for the first case which is at Lower Dir, because it
operates at low head and low flow rate and as it has shown better results according to the
parameters as compared to other turbines. Its output power is 0.1MW to 1MW.
12. On the other hand, propeller turbine is most suitable for the second case among the rest of
the turbines according to the given design parameters which are at District Malakand, it is
used for medium head and medium flow rate where its efficiency is 85 %. Its output power
generation can be from 10KW to 6MW. For the discussed cases above, it is the most
optimum selection at specific design parameters.
13. Important amongst all, hydropower plants is feasible to the environment because it has no
harmful effect on the atmosphere i.e. ozone depletion potential is very less.
