Summary of Three Web-Based Instructional Resources
Plickers
Just like the Kahoot online application, Plickers has a blue navigation bar on the top of
the webpage to guide users after creating an account. The navigation bar includes the following
tabs: Library, reports, classes, live view, cards, and help. Instructors can easily access saved
questions and completed quizzes through the Library tab. The Reports tap allows instructors to
easily access class and score reports of individual students or class averages as a whole. The
Classes tabs allows the instructor to specifically assign cards and questions to individual students
in a class. Teachers can present the game through the Live View option once the class is ready to
start.
Instructors can use this application for almost every subject. This is a multiple-choice
question application where an instructor can incorporate questions of all kinds and insert their
own answers. The Cards tab allows the instructor to print whichever cards they would like to in a
neat and simple format. Groups of all sized can use this activity with clickers to increase student
engagement. Instructors can also see the overall score percentage for each individual question
they make. They can also see which questions have the highest and lowest percentages, and the
results come out instantaneously once a student submits an answer.
Kahoot
Kahoot is an online web resource that allows instructors and students to develop their
own quizzes, games, surveys and online discussions. The process in developing ones own quiz
online is fairly simple, and the website is not complicated to navigate. All four options allow the
instructor or students to add in any content of their choice. The answers can all be input by the
creator as well. The quiz option allows the creator to add as many questions as preferred with up
to four personalized answers per questions. The jumble game option can help aid and improve
student engagement and critical thinking. Four answers are allowed and the answers can be
rearranged, according to a students choices. The discussion option allows for the creator to
initiate and facilitate discussions while the survey simply allows the creator to gather opinions
and insight.
A teacher might use the quiz options to pre-assess students knowledge on a concept.
This will aid in the process of deciding which concept matters need more attention and time than
other concepts. In addition to a pre-assessment, an instructor can use Kahoot application to test
what students have learned and retained after a lesson completed in the classroom. The jumble
game option can be used for teacher who want to challenge students with critical thinking math
problems. The instructor can list up to four problems and ask students to list the answers of each
equation from least to greatest. Each quiz or activity comes with a Kahoot pin number that
enables each student to enter a specific quiz. Students can access the quiz through their
cellphones, laptop, tablets or other wifi-supported technology devices with web access.
Nearpod
The Nearpod application allows for the instructor to view two separate screens, a teacher and
student screen. Each lesson created on the Nearpod application can be opened from the teachers
personal library. A pin number appears after a lesson is created for students to enter when they
attempt to review a lessons content. Unlike the previous two web applications, Nearpod is
compatible with Google Classroom. Nearpod offers the teachers two separate ways to present
lesson content. The first option shows the exact same content for every student on each device.
The second option provides the students with a mode, different from the Kahoot and Plickers,
where each student can access lesson content separately at their own paces.
Nearpod takes the interaction option a step higher than Kahoot and Plickers. Teacher can
ask students to illustrate simple concepts to answer questions if needed. Each answer can be seen
by the instructor while it is being completed, and the instructor can choose to save specific
answers and examples that may used to assist others. Because the instructor has the option to
view a students answers, this can help the instructor to correct common mistakes made by
students. This application can be used for any subject of the instructors choice. Nearpods online
store provides pre-made online interactive classrooms that can be paid for and used in a
classroom to enhance student engagement. These pre-made lessons can also be combined with
personal made lessons by the instructor. After the lesson and quizzes are completed, the teachers
can provide students with instant feedback.
Selected Application for Deeper Learning
I selected Kahoot for me quiz and learning activity.
VA Standard of Learning
The student will investigate and understand simple machines and their uses. Key concepts
include
a) types of simple machines (lever, screw, pulley, wheel and axle, inclined plane, and wedge);
b) how simple machines function;
c) compound machines (scissors, wheelbarrow, and bicycle); and
d) examples of simple and compound machines found in the school, home, and work
environment.

Evidence of the Completed Product
The Kahoot online application was easy and simple to use. As soon as I entered the website, the
sign up button was easily visible in the upper right hand corner. I decided to create a pre-
assessment for students in the third grade. I created my questions from the SOL Science standard
3.2. This pre-assessment is simple and would probably be introduced before a lesson is
introduced on simple machines. The first question gauges if students have a general basis of
whether or not simple machines are beneficial or unhelpful. The second question asks how many
simple machines there are in total. The questions after that ask students to identify what each
type of simple machine looks like. It was enjoyable to find pictures that matched what the
questions were referring to. I did not find anything particularly challenging about the application.
It was quite simple. If I were to create the same test over again, I would probably add a diversity
of topic into the quiz. I could have included more questions that had the students identify
physical examples of simple machines to test their prior knowledge. Once I dive into complex
subjects, the quizzes I develop will become more challenging and interesting to create. I did not
know that there were resources like these out there for educators to use for free. I will be using
these websites frequently throughout my teaching career.
