SUSTAINABLE BEACH RESORT


A FIVE STAR FACILITY,
HAVELOCK ISLAND, ANDAMAN.

INTRODUCTION

Havelock Island is part of Ritchies Archipelago, in Indias Andaman Islands. Its


known for its dive sites and beaches, like Elephant Beach, with its coral reefs.
Crescent-shaped Radhanagar Beach is a popular spot for watching the sunset. On
the islands east side, rocky sections mark long, tree-lined Vijaynagar Beach. The
island's forested interior is home to birdlife such as white-headed mynas and
woodpeckers.
This section of the report describes the features of the proposed project in sufficient
detail to allow an assessment of its environmental impact.
A complete description is important to understand the potential environmental
implications of the initiative and accordingly addressing issues in an appropriate
manner.
Description of the proposed project components and activities are presented
together with the aspects during the construction and operation phase of the
project which are also important from the environmental perspective.
As the state having largest number of tourist inflow causing depletion in its
resources which need to be preserved, hence promotion of sustainable ecotourism
has become necessary.
The core idea is to minimize the intervention with nature in any manner.
A resort provides you luxury comforts that are intimate and homely, spacious and
expansive enough to let you feel absolutely unconfined.

AIM

To design a resort which can integrate concept to reduce impact on the environment to
the minimum.
To adopt principles of local construction techniques, arts and crafts, design spaces
reflecting local style.
To connect conservation, communities and sustainable travel.
To minimize impact to existing ecology.
Build environmental and cultural awareness and respect.
OBJECTIVE

To create one stop holiday destination.


To reinforce the concept of leisure and recreation.
To create a long term, lively, urban and viable resort.
To create an ecologically sound, balanced community which will preserve and enhance
natural qualities in and around the site.
Employment generation and increase in the life standards of local people.
Sense of awareness towards sustainability in design to produce mixed ecological
footprint.
To create an environment which acts as a breathing space amidst chaotic urban life.
To integrate landscape and the built form.
Integration of local arts and craft in design.

THRUST AREA
Acclimatized design useable under all possible climatic conditions of the area.
Confluence of contemporary and vernacular architecture.
Using local building materials and using nature and landscape as its main objective.
Iconic resort with multi facilities in well-organized manner.
Use of natural day light creating pattern and aesthetics in resort.
To emphasize on rainwater harvesting to create a better microclimate in the area.
To enhance the surroundings with greenery, landscaping and recommended aesthetics.

SCOPE
The project is believed to be one stop holiday destination for the travelers and local
people to conduct wedding, parties and recreational activities.
Public core with reception, lobby and front office.
Leisure facilities, pool complex, gym, spa, landscape.
Dining facilities, categories of rooms- premium, deluxe, suites.

SITE DETAILS

The Indian Hotels Company Limited has proposed a premium 5 star resort Vivanta by Taj at
Havelock to be located at Radha Nagar, Gram Panchyat - Govinda Nagar, Tehsil - Port Blair,
Havelock Island, Dist. Andaman, Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The project will come up on a 45-
acre beachfront parcel of land. For this, the Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has entered
into a long term lease agreement with Andaman & Nicobar Islands Integrated Development
Corporation (ANIIDCO). The proposed project is designated under Island Coastal Regulation
Zone (ICRZ) and falls under ICRZ-III and requires ICRZ clearance from Andaman & Nicobar Island
Coastal Zone Management Authority (ANCZMA) for approval of the project.
Based on the recommendations of A&N CZMA, Environmental clearance and CRZ clearance will
be issued by MoEF, New Delhi. The site is a beachfront property which falls under the Coastal
Regulation Zone having about 400 meters of beach frontage. It extends inwards in land to a
distance of approximately 525 meter encapsulating an area with dense tropical vegetation, a
water channel and some plantations.

The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) has entered into a long term lease with Andaman &
Nicobar Islands Integrated Development Corporation (ANIIDCO) for building a premium 5 star
resort in Havelock Island. The project will come up on a 45-acre beachfront parcel of land and
will be branded Vivanta by Taj, Havelock Island. The land parcel is located on Radha Nagar Beach
(also called Beach No.7) which was rated as the Best Beach in Asia by Time Magazine in 2004.
