    2.0 DESIGN OF STONE MASONRY RETAINING WALL OVER CULVERT


    The culvert has been constructed at a lower level. However keeping in view the road gradient, it is proposed
    to keep the road level about 2.5m above the top level of culvert. To achieve this, it is proposed to fill soil upto
    a depth 2.5m above it and constructs of retaining wall on both sides using stone masonry. The present note
    checks the design and adequacy retaining wall. A typical cross section of stone masonry along with
    compacted back filled of 2.3 m depth is given in sketch. It is proposed the concrete surface shall be chipped
    to increase frictional resistance at this interface before construction of stone masonry wall. In addition to this,
    anchoring shall be provided to ensure additional stability against lateral pressure from soil as well as surcharge
    load. The abutments walls have been designed for live load surcharge equivalent to 1.2m earthfill as per clause
    217.1 IRC 6 2000.

    2.4 CONCLUSION
    It can be seen that the stone masonry wall is safe against sliding as well as overturning however for additional
    safety it is recommended to provide rock anchor of 20 mm diameter at appropriate spacing to suit site
    condition in a staggered manner.
