STAGES

Activity 1 : Warm-up
Aim : to introduce the topic
Procedure : The teacher introduces the topic of stress. Ss. are asked the following question :
What do you find stressful ? and the Ss. take turns to answer
Interaction : T.-Ss.
Teaching aids: the blackboard
Timing : 5
Description of the activity: The teacher writes the title of the new lesson on the blackboard and
asks the students if they had any recent experience when they felt stressed and how they felt. The
students take turns to answer, while the teacher notes on the blackboard the causes of stress
mentioned by the students (e.g. upcoming test/project, failing test, fight with parents, fight with
friend.) For each situation which causes stress, the students are asked to think about ways of
handling them.

Activity 2 : Reading
Aim : to look for specific information
Procedure : Ss. are asked to read the text on the handout. The teacher explains the meaning of
unknown words, if any. Then, the students are asked to find 3 key-words related to the text.

Teaching aids: Handouts, blackboard
Timing : 10
Description of the activity: The teacher will give the students handouts containing a text with the
title Fact Sheet on Stress/Anxiety. The students are asked to read the text and to say if they
have any unknown words, so that the teacher will write them on the blackboard and explain
them. After reading the text, the students are asked to find 3 key-words from the text and to say
what the main idea is.
Activity 3 : Writing
Aim : answering questions based on the text
Procedure : Ss. are asked to answer a few questions in order to check their general
comprehension of the text. Students will write down their answers and then the teacher will ask
the students to read them.
Interaction : Individual work, T.-Ss.
Teaching aids: Handouts
Timing : 10
Description of the activity: The students will have to answer individually to a set of questions
related to the text. After that, the teacher will correct any mistakes and evaluate their work.

Activity 4 : Discussion and debate


Aim : to improve their speaking skills
Procedure : Ss. work in small groups and are asked to compose a questionnaire entitled : Are
you stressed ?, which should contain at least 3 questions designed to find out how students
should cope with stress. Each member of the group should ask different people in the class to
reply to the questionnaire. In the end, Ss. should present their findings to the whole class.

Timing : 20
Description of the activity: The class will be split into small groups and they are asked to think
about 3 Y/N questions related to the topic of stress in order to find out the causes of it. Then,
each member of the groups will ask their colleagues to reply to the questionnaire. After
completing it, the spokespersons of each group will present the results to the whole class.

Activity 5 : Assigning the homework


Procedure : Ss. are asked to write down some tips to beat stress in everyday life.
