Synopsis
During the financial crisis at the beginning of the 21st century, it was close to bankruptcy, but it has
since returned to profitability.Ford is the second-largest U.S.-based automaker (preceded by General
Motors) and the fifth-largest in the world.
Ford is the eighth-ranked overall American-based company in the 2010 Fortune 500 list, based on
global revenues in 2009 of $118.3 billion. In 2008, Ford produced 5.532 million automobiles and
employed about 213,000 employees at around 90 plants and facilities worldwide.
The company went public in 1956 but the Ford family, through special Class B shares, still retain 40
percent voting rights.
Henry Ford's first attempt at a car company under his own name was the Henry Ford Company on
November 3, 1901, which became the Cadillac Motor Company on August 22, 1902, after Ford left
with the rights to his name. The Ford Motor Company was launched in a converted factory in 1903
with $28,000 in cash from twelve investors, most notably John and Horace Dodge.
During its early years, the company produced just a few cars a day at its factory on Mack Avenue and
later its factory on Piquette Avenue in Detroit.
Within a decade, the company would lead the world in the expansion and refinement of the
assembly line concept, and Ford soon brought much of the part production in-house in a vertical
integration that seemed a better path for the era.
Henry Ford was 39 years old when he founded the Ford Motor Company, which would go on to
become one of the world's largest and most profitable companies. It has been in continuous family
control for over 100 years and is one of the largest family-controlled companies in the world.

Issues
1-The safety recall impacted approximately 400,000 2015-17 Ford Transit van or bus vehicles.
2-The affected Ford Transit vehicles were built in the company's Kansas City assembly plant from
Jan. 17, 2014 to June 15, 2017, Ford said.
5- Fords current business is showing signs of weakness. The company is projecting $9 billion in pre-
tax profit this year, down from $10.4 billion in 2016.

Learnings
1-In North America, where Ford was in deep trouble a few short years ago, the company posted
near-record pre-tax operating profit of just over $2 billion.
2-About 10.2% operating margin in North America is among the best in the world. And theres
reason to think things could get even better in Fords home market later this year.
3-Ford is launching two attractive new vehicles, the Escape crossover and Fusion mid-sized sedan,
into the hottest segments of the market, and its adding 400,000 units of factory capacity to take
advantage of increased demand.
4-All the while, Ford continued to invest in new products. It has earned credibility.
5-The Escape, Explorer and Fusion are all scheduled for overhaul in 2019, according to BofA Merrill
Lynchs annual Car Wars Report, which tracks automakers future products. Meanwhile, Ford is
making do with minor improvements, like a facelift and new wifi hotspot on the 2018 Explorer.
