The Ampair 600 is a new micro wind turbine. With a rotor diameter of only 1.7 metres,
it’s especially designed to meet the demand from individual householders for a renewable
energy source.
Recently, micro wind turbines have been hitting the headlines. We all know that the Earth’s
fossil fuels are running out. And while the debate about a nuclear alternative continues,
“renewables” are seen as a safe, clean, reliable and environmentally-friendly source of energy.
Of the three main sources of renewable energy – sun, water and wind – it is the last that
holds most promise for home-owners. (By the way, we have experience in all three areas
of renewable technology, and no bias towards a particular solution.)
The question is: how much difference can wind turbines make? The Ampair 600 has an
electrical output of 0.6kW. Over a year, a single turbine will generate up to a quarter of
the electricity needed for an average three-bedroom semi-detached house. That’s when
the building is in a moderately windy location. Bigger buildings, such as schools, hospitals
and offices can accommodate multiple turbines.
So it is possible to “do your bit” for the environment and demonstrate your commitment to
renewable energy.
In addition to the ecological advantages, there are, of course, financial benefits to installing
a micro wind turbine. Access to a renewable energy source decreases your dependence on
national suppliers. The turbine itself and its positive impact on energy bills can add to the
value of your property and its attractiveness to future buyers.

A brief history of wind energy.
The modern history of wind turbines goes back to at least the 1920s
and agricultural Middle America. With no access to a national grid,
these small turbines were the ideal solution for providing isolated
farmsteads with electricity.
And with the first oil crisis of the 1970s, the whole world suddenly
had to sit up and take notice of renewable energy sources. The state
legislature of California encouraged the development of large-scale
wind farms, a movement mirrored on this side of Atlantic, nowadays
with off-shore installations.
In the UK, small wind turbines have also served remote farms off
the national grid. But Britons also are uniquely fond of caravanning
and ocean sailing – which has created a large and growing demand
for efficient, quiet, and sensibly-priced wind turbine technology.
So, on the one hand, the giant turbines off the coast of Denmark
now supply 20% of the country’s electricity needs, while individual
consumers in the UK are leading a new wave of demand for
renewable energy sources.
