b. The picture I was given shows (describe photo) and the caption says (read caption, paraphrase it, or explain it).
c. State option topic and issue raised by the photo and caption. This relates to the Option Topic Leisure and especially the issue of recreational
dangers
d. Give a definition of leisure and the related topic of recreational dangers. (How are they related?)
e. Give a map of what you are going to talk about 3 main points e.g.
Im going to talk about (What main aspects of the situation or issue you want to highlight),
then Ill discuss .(What are the main reasons for this situation or issue)
Finally Ill look at (How has the situation developed OR What could be done to prevent it)
Develop your three points- add supporting details in your discussion (specific examples from different or similar cases),
f. Conclude with one sentence. (Signal your conclusion) In conclusion, I believe its clear that. To sum up, Im sure you would agree that.
MAP e. So I am going to talk about three main aspects of this issue: How dangerous sharks are,
whether killing man-eating sharks is a good idea, and finally what basic precautions
divers and snorkellers should take to avoid major dangers.
1. How dangerous are sharks? Sharks have the reputation of being extremely dangerous.
Develop your three Especially the larger sharks like the great white shark, as pictured in the photo. There have
points been accidents indeed; people killed or badly injured. And these accidents often go to the
Example 1: surfer attacked newspapers front page. For example when a surfer in South Africa got attacked by a white
by shark in SA
shark in the middle of the surfing competition, a couple of years ago.
Supporting detail 1:
However, despite their bad reputation, sharks are responsible for very few human deaths.
Compare sharks /
mosquitoes Only about 10 a year. That is nothing compared to human deaths caused by mosquitoes and
Supporting detail 2: sharks malaria. Mosquitoes kill hundreds of thousands of people and leave millions with
reputation incurable malaria. So overall, I would say sharks dangerous reputation is wildly overrated.
Supporting detail 3: Why
It is easy to understand why, as they are quite impressive and aggressive. It has been said
sharks attack
that the only reason sharks attack humans is because they confuse them with seals, they
natural prey. As more and more people go swimming, diving or snorkelling in areas where
sharks feed, accidents are bound to happen.
2. The second point I want to discuss is whether killing man-eating sharks is a good idea.
Supporting detail 4: eco
Of course, when a shark attacks a person, people feel quite shocked. Some of them will
system
advocate the killings of sharks. However. Sharks and other animals in the sea are essential
elements of the eco-system. Killing them will not really protect divers, as they will still go to
Example 2: Sparrows in shark-infested areas, furthermore it could create an unbalance in the ecosystem where
China sharks would have been decimated. In the past, human attempt to destroy an entire species
for their own benefits led to some disasters. For example when the Chinese government
tried to get rid of birds in the 50s because they ate too many grains. They started a
campaign to kill all sparrows. This campaign resulted in a natural disaster as insects, no
longer eaten by sparrows, invaded the fields and ate the grains. A famine followed. This
shows that man should be careful before killing anything thats dangerous.
3. Going back to the problem of sharks being dangerous for surfers and divers. Diving in the
Supporting detail 3: Specific sea can always be dangerous, occasional divers should understand that. They should take a
advice few basic precautions to avoid being attacked by sharks. Quite often, these simple
precautions are not even known by tourists and travellers. For example,
Always swim in a group. ... Don't wander too far from shore. ... Avoid the water at night,
dawn, or dusk. ... Don't enter the water if bleeding. ... Don't go into waters containing
sewage. All these pieces of advice will not guarantee 100% safety but all adventurous
travellers should understand and accept that recreational activities in a natural and wild
environment can always present risks,
conclusion f. In conclusion, I would say that in my opinion - sharks do not deserve their bad reputation
and should be protected. Most sharks are actually not dangerous. Like the sharks in the
Great Barrier Reef, which are very friendly to divers and are a great touristic attraction.
