Dear Families,
This week we had so much fun learning with the help of two Halloween books. The first book,
Room on the Broom, we used to learn about story elements like character, setting, problem and
solution. Its a great story to practice retelling (a very important skill in kindergarten). We also
learned how to be better readers by changing our voices to match the characters.
The other book is called Ten Timid Ghosts and we used it primarily during math time. The ten
nice ghosts live in a house that a witch wants for her own. The witch moves in and scares away the
ghosts one at a time. We used the book to practice thinking about how the number 10 can be broken
down into smaller number pairs like 2 & 8. We had little ghost erasers we used to act out the story
so the kids could see that if 2 ghosts had been scared away then there were 8 ghosts still in the
house.
During math we are also beginning to understand ways to make 5. This concept is a precursor to
addition and subtraction facts to 10. The kids play a memory game with number cards. The cards
are turned upside down and then turned over. The object is to make pairs that equal 5. I have
created a Take Home math practice activity that you will see next week.
Have a safe weekend,
