Class size: 15-16 (4 boys + 12/11 girls)

Age: 16

Target language: Simple past and past continuous tense

Materials: story, papers

Aids: Blackboard and pictures

Background knowledge: The students learned past simple and past continuous in the past years.

Anticipated problems: The running dictation activity may take longer than the expected time.

Solution: Teacher will skip the production stage.

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to ;

Order the sentences to create a story


Write the formulas of these tenses
Complete the sentences
Warm-up stage (T->Sts) 2-3 minutes:

Teacher asks students if they have ever watched a movie about pirates.
Teacher shows a picture of pirates of the Caribbean and the other pirate.

While teaching stage (T-> Sts) 5minutes:

Teacher teaches some words on the flashcards which are related to the story.
( appendix A)

Practice stage: (Sts -> Sts, T-> Sts) 24 minutes :

Teacher sticks the story out of the class on a wall and divides the students into 2 groups.
Teacher wants the students to choose a writer in each group and prepares the students
for the running dictation activity.
Teacher changes the papers of the groups with each other, gives the correct version of
the story to each group and wants the students to check their mistakes. Teacher gives a
candy to the winner group. (appendix B)
Teacher wants the students to order the sentences which make a meaningful story.

Production stage: ( Sts-> Sts, T-> Sts) 8 minutes

Teacher brings a treasure chest and there are golden yellow papers in it. The papers
include the sentences with while and when (appendix C)
Teacher wants the students to work in goups, select 1 golden balls from this chest and
to complete the sentence.

Post teaching: (T-> Sts) 5 minutes:

After they are ready, teacher wants the students to come to the board and write their
own sentences.
Teacher checks the answers with the class.

Pirate story
1. He was wearing an eye patch and he had a parrot on his shoulder and a wooden
leg.
2. Instead of his right hand he had a metal hook.
3. An old pirate was sitting in the bar.
4. Arrr! , said the pirate, You see, When I fell from the ship, there were some
sharks.
5. A young sailor was chatting with the pirate and he asked him about his
adventures at sea.
6. Luckily, my men pulled me back onto the ship before the sharks ate me
completely, but one of the sharks got my leg.
7. He was smoking a pipe.
8. And how about the hook on your hand? How did you lose your hand?
9. So, how did you lose your leg?, the young man asked the pirate.
10. While I was boarding a ship, another sailor cut off my hand with a sword.
11. Thats amazing! What a life full of adventures! said the young man. And how
about your eye? How did you lose that?
12. I was eating a grapefruit when the juice went into my eye.
13. But I dont understand. How did you lose your eye from the grapefruit juice?
14. Arrr! said the pirate, it was my first day with the new hook.

Correct version

Pirate story
An old pirate was sitting in the bar. He was smoking a pipe. He was
wearing an eye patch and he had a parrot on his shoulder and a
wooden leg. Instead of his right hand he had a metal hook. A young
sailor was chatting with the pirate and he asked him about his
adventures at sea.
So, how did you lose your leg?, the young man asked the pirate.
