Standards
I. Standard Five: Computational Thinking and Computer Science Applications - Students will be
able to apply computational thinking skills and computer science applications as tools to
develop solutions to engineering problems.

Stage 1 Desired Results

Big Idea(s): Robots use a systems model to function. Sensors provide information
about the world, the program used that information to follow the programmers
specifications, and the robot reacts appropriately.

Essential Question(s):
1. What is the Systems Model?
2. How does a robot use the systems model to function?
3. Why is important to be precise when programming the Vex IQ?

Student Objective(s): Students will use sensors on the Vex IQ robots to turn for an
angle, detect objects, and detect colors.

Stage 2 Assessment Evidence

Performance Task(s):
Students will:
Turn the Vex IQ (Sensors: 3. Turn for angle Basic Movement)
Detect objects (Sensors: 2.Forward Until Near)
Detect color (Sensors: Forward Until Color)

Other Evidence:

Stage 3 Learning Plan

Total Time: 6- 50 minute class periods
Engagement:
Students will be watch short video clips from each sensor lesson found in
http://www.education.rec.ri.cmu.edu/previews/robot_c_products/teaching_rc_vex_iq/
Exploration:
Teacher will supply an illustration of the Systems Model and an example of the
Systems Model.
1. Students will complete the following sensors lessons on
http://www.education.rec.ri.cmu.edu/previews/robot_c_products/teaching_rc_vex_i
q/:
a. Sensors: 3. Turn for Angle Lesson (1,2,3,4,5, C)
b. Sensor: 2. Forward until Near Lesson (1,2,3,4,C)
c. Sensor: 4. Forward until Color Lesson (1,2,3,4,C)
2. Students will record notes and reflect on each lesson using 1.4 SR Sensor
Reflections.docx. These notes may be used as a formative assessment and for
the Unit 1.5.

Explanation:
The explanation will ANSWER these questions
What is the Systems Model?
How does a robot use the systems model to function?
Why is important to be precise when programming the Vex IQ?

Extension:
Students will complete Sensors:1 Forward until Touch (1,2,3,4,i, C)
Evaluation:
The teacher will assess the students progress after each lesson.
The students will complete assessment question from 1.4 SR__________
Exit Ticket
Explain how the VEX IQ robot uses the Systems Model to perform a task.
