1 Project Techno-economic analysis of biomass to chemicals processes for raw
title: material security
Project The era of oil independence is approaching and sustainability is the key
overview to the future. The project is aimed to evaluate technically and
: economically the attractiveness of biomass to chemical process routes,
as well as to identify if and how those processes can be directly tied-in to
existing (petro)chemicals facilities. Sensitivity analysis (via e.g. Monte
Carlo simulation) is part of the work to account for uncertainties inherent
in this topic.

2 Project Flexibility and resiliency in process design for essential oil and biomass to
title: fuels/chemicals
Project In processing essential oil or biomass to produce chemicals/fuels, there
overview are uncertainties encountered during process design. This is mainly due
: to variations in the feed compositions because such process should be
able to handle large variety of feedstocks. In practice, process engineers
just design the process equipment large enough to handle those
variations. However, such practice may not be economically efficient.
Hence, the goal of this research is to develop methodologies to design
flexible processes that can handle feed variations.
Apart from this flexibility, the designed process should be able to cope
quickly with any disturbance. Hence, the resiliency of the process should
be taken into account, which calls for simultaneous design and control.
The method will be tested for processing essential oils and biomass to
fuels/chemicals.

3 Project Process integration for efficient use of resources (energy, water,
title: materials)
Project Process integration is a holistic view to optimize the use of resources
overview (e.g. energy, water, materials, etc.). It is supported with different
: visualization tools (e.g. composite curves, material recycle pinch diagram)
as well as mathematical programming tools (e.g. linear, nonlinear, integer,
mixed integer nonlinear programming).
In this project, it is aimed to develop effective and efficient tools that are
easier to implement in industries.
