PENCIL GRASP PARENT HANDOUT

Throughout this school year the way your child holds his/her
crayons/pencils will be maturing. Your child may have held their crayon with
their fist or all of their fingers. This is normal in your child's early years.
Soon your child will be able to hold their pencil with a tripod grasp. This
means they will hold it in their pincher fingers and rest it on their middle
finger. The way your child holds their pencil will affect the way they color,
write and even eat as we hold our eating utensils the way we hold our
pens/pencils. Here are some things you can do at home to help your child
develop their pencil grasp and hand strength:

1. Use broken pieces of crayons/chalk-this will promote a proper grasp

and will strengthen the small muscles of the hand needed for fine
motor skills such as writing.

2. Have your child color or practice writing on vertical surfaces such as

easels, chalkboards, or paper taped to the wall-this builds the
muscles that help the hand for writing.

3.Encourage your child to play with a variety of toys that will work the
small muscles of their hands. This can include stringing beads, lacing cards, pegs,
interlocking blocks,puzzles, etc.
