This paper presents the design of cold storage for vegetable as per the requirement of Mr. Ujjwal.
The design is done according to the guidelines of 2006 ASHRAE Handbook Refrigeration. The
design is done for 250 kg per shipment, which results in 0.8 TR of cooling load and electricity
input of 0.75 kW.

Client Requirements:

250 kg of vegetables to be brought and stored in a room of size 12 ft x 9 ft.

Design Method

For the calculation of cooling load following temperature and humidity parameters are selected.

Design ambient temperature: 350C

Cold room temperature: 20C

Cold room humidity: 90%

The room is insulated with 1 inch thick polystyrene (thermocol) in three sides and partitioned
with plywood and 4 inch thick polystyrene in one side. Please refer the drawing.

Total Refrigeration Load is sum of

Transmission Load 3263 Btu/hr

Infiltration Load 1230 Btu/hr

So we design the refrigeration system for the load of 10,000 Btu/hr or 2.93 kJ/s.
Phase II: Refrigeration Equipment Design

Refrigerant Selected: R134a Operating Temperature: -10 degree Celsius to 44 degree Celsius

[The properties of refrigerant R134a are obtained from Thermodynamics: An Engineering

Approach by Cengel and Boles]

The refrigerant cycle is analyzed for a refrigeration capacity of 0.83 TR (2.93 kW).

Evaporator temperature = -10 degree Celsius

Condenser temperature = 44 degree Celsius

Suction Pressure (P1 = P4) = 200.74 kPa

Discharge Pressure (P2 = P3) = 950 kPa

Now, from table (Cengel and Boles) :

h1 = 244.51 kJ/kg h2 = 277.27 kJ/kg h3 = 104.51 kJ/kg h4 = 104.51 kJ/kg

Refrigerant Mass flow rate = q/(h1 h4 ) = 0.021 kg/s

Compressor capacity = mass flow rate x (h2 h1) = 0.688 kW ~ 1 hp

Compressor Sizing:

Compressor Suction Pressure 200.74 kPa

Compressor Discharge Pressure 950 kPa
Compressor Capacity 0.688 kW ( choose 1 HP)

Condenser Sizing

Condenser Pressure 950 kPa

Type Forced convection, air cooled (with fan)
Condenser Capacity 3.63 kW (~1.04 TR choose 1.2 TR)

Evaporator Sizing:

Evaporator Pressure 200.74 kPa

Type Forced convection, air cooled ( with fan)
Evaporator Capacity 2.94 kW (~0.84 TR choose 1 TR)

Expansion Device:

Pressure to be decreased From 950 kPa to 200.74 kPa

Type Thermostatic Expansion Valve

Piping:

22 mm/28 mm diameter pipes for suction line, discharge line and liquid line

Control Equipments:

For temperature and humidity control : Should sense temperature and on or off the evaporator
fan and/or compressor as required. ( optimum temperature of room: 2 degree Celsius to 8 degree
Celsius)
