EPOXY-PHENOLIC PAINT SYSTEM (INHIBITIVE PRIMER)

EP-PR/EP/EP

1 DESCRIPTION

Catalysed epoxy-phenolic system for corrosive environments. One coat primer (EP-PR) and
two coats finish (EP).

2 SURFACES

Carbon steel, usually under insulation. May be used for mixed carbon steel/stainless
steel/nickel alloys installations when economical.

3 SURFACE PREPARATION

Provide a near-white metal finish with a profile of approximately 2 mils per Steel Structures
Painting Council (SSPC) Surface Preparation Specification, SSPC-SP-10.1 Remove all dirt, oil,
grease, salts, moisture, chemicals, and other contamination prior to abrasive blast cleaning.
Alternative surface preparation methods such as hand or power tool cleaning may be used for touch-
up.

1 The appropriate type and mesh size of the abrasive shall be used to meet the specified anchor
profile or pattern. The use of Testex replica tape and micrometer to determine anchor profile is
recommended.
2 Coverage is practical coverage at 20% loss - square feet/gallon at average thickness.
3 Pot life varies with the paint material. W/S indicates that the recommended pot life for the
Wisconsin product is shown on the left. The pot life for the Sigma products at 20C (68F) is
shown on the right. See Table 2 for the pot life for the Sigma products at other temperatures.
4 Recoat time of 8-12 hours at 21C (70F) for the Wisconsin products is shown on the left. Recoat
time of 8 hours at 68F for the Sigma products is shown on the right. See Table 2 for the recoat
time for the Sigma products at other temperatures. Application of Plasite 7100 AC Primer and
Plasite 7122 finish coats must follow manufacturer's curing instructions. It is required that the
substrate temperature be brought to a minimum of 21C (70F) for 2 to 5 hours within 24 hours
after application to ensure proper polymerization.
5 Primer may be brushed if steel condition requires.

4 MIXING AND THINNING

According to manufacturer's instructions and SSPC-PA-1, only Manufacturer's recommended

thinners may be used. The amount of thinner required shall be measured, not estimated, to ensure
consistency during coating application. Mix pigment into paint, add catalyst (curing agent), and mix
thoroughly with mechanical agitation only. Allow 30 minutes "sweat-in" at 24C (75F), for the
Wisconsin products. Allow 10 minutes "sweat-in at 25C (77F) for the Sigma products. See Table 2
of this specification for "sweat-in" for the Sigma products at other temperatures.

5 APPLICATION

According to manufacturer's instructions and SSPC-PA-1, typical set-ups for application

equipment items such as spray gun types, as well as tips, needles, and caps shall follow the paint
manufacturer's recommendations. Use "mist coat" technique followed by cross-pass application.
Heated facilities must be used when temperatures are under 10C (50F).
