Hot deserts
Some animals burrow
underground to escape the
heat.
Nocturnal animals sleep during the
day, sheltering to help prevent
dehydration.
Animals may hibernate during
temperature highs or lows (deserts
can get very cold at night).
Others obtain moisture from the
insects, plants and seeds that they eat. Meerkat,
Botswana

Grasslands
Small animals can hide easily in
the grasses.
Large animals protect themselves with speed or
camouflage.
Many grasslands animals
live in large groups where
there is protection from
predators for the weaker
members.

Tropical forests or
rainforests
Animals have adapted to
survive in their environment
e.g. strong beaks to crack
open nuts, long claws to
Green tree python (Morelia viridis), New Guinea cling to branches of trees.
Relationships between animals and plants
benefit both e.g. animals spread seeds.
Many animals use camouflage to 'disappear'.
Some animals are poisonous and use bright
colours to warn predators to leave them alone. Howler monkey,
Brazil

Tundra
Animals have an extra
layer of fat to keep them
warm; their fur is longer
Snowy owl, Canada and thicker.
Many hibernate during the winter when food is
hard to find.
Some migrate to warmer places to avoid winter.
Animals breed and raise their
young in the short summer.

What does endangered mean?
Endangered animals are animals that are at risk
of extinction.
Environments, animals and humans are all part
of the balance of nature. When something
affects environments, all living things are
affected.
As the environment changes, animals that
cannot adapt die out (i.e. become extinct).

What is being done?
Governments or organisations can:
protect the remaining populations
inform the public
create captive breeding programmes
reintroduce animals to the wild.
