After the first/second year, irrespective of whether you pass/attempt the first/second year examination or
not, you can seek admission for the second/third year by submitting the Course Registration Form with
requisite programme fee within the re-registration schedule as-notified by the University. Re-registration
Forms for second and third year are given in the Programme Guide as Form No.13 and 14, respectively.

completing B.Sc. programme, you can concentrate your attention only on those courses in which you intend
to take the examination. The remaining courses can be carried forward. In this way, you can plan your courses
for more than three but not more than six years. By a proper planning every year, you can complete this
programme according to your convenience.
Whenever you decide to do the previous years course, ask for fresh assignments in the July month from
the Assistant Registrar, MPDD at the Headquarters in the prescribed Form printed in this programme
guide, and submit them according to schedule and appear in the term-end-examination. You can also download
assignments from IGNOU website, www.ignou.ac.in

11.1 Physics
If you wish to understand how nature works, both at the everyday level, and on scales of time large and
small, you have to turn to physics. For example, you may be interested in knowing why nature is the
way it is. Where did the universe come from and why is there a universe? What is a black hole? You
may wish to know about the mechanism that generates sunlight which makes life possible, about gravity
that keeps us restrained to the earth and makes heavenly bodies move the way they do, about atoms
of which matter around you is made of and on whose stability our world depends.
The answers to all such questions life in the domain of physics. Physics is subtle, yet simple. The
fundamental laws of physics look simple yet they encompass a large variety of phenomena; physical,
technological and natural. The applications of the principles of physics throughout science and engineering
are fascinating. Indeed, physics is fundamental!
You will discover the world of physics through variety of courses listed below. We hope that this study
will be a rewarding experience for you.
Elementary Mechanics BPHE-101
We live in a Universe of continual motion. Electrons swarming around atoms in matter, buses speeding
along highways, planets orbiting the sun, the stars and galaxies rushing apart are all examples of matter
in motion.
The branch of physics dealing with the motion of bodies as well as bodies at rest or in equilibrium is
called mechanics. Since motion is such an important feature of the world around us, it is the logical subject
to begin the study of physical phenomena. Therefore, we are offering this course entitled Elementary
Mechanics as the first elective in physics. As the title suggests, in this course you will study elementary
concepts and laws of mechanics, including the laws or conservation of linear momentum, angular
momentum and energy.
We use the concepts and laws of mechanics constantly in everyday life and in engineering applications.
We use them when we ride bicycles, lift heavy loads, play tennis or construct bridges. Many fascinating
developments of the space age, such as launching of space probes and artificial satellites, are direct
applications of the laws of mechanics. These laws allow us to predict with remarkable accuracy the motion
of planets in the solar system as well as to explain the formation of stars and galaxies. You will study
the applications of these concepts and laws of simple and familiar physical situations in Blocks 1 and
2 of this course. Their applications to more complex situations, such as planetary motion, many-
particle systems, rigid body dynamics and motion in non-inertial frames of reference form the subject of
Block 3.
Mechanics is the most fundamental area of physics. A sound knowledge of mechanics is needed to study
vibrations and waves, electromagnetism, thermal physics, quantum mechanics, special and general theories
of relatively, etc. To study physics at the undergraduate level, this course is a must.

Before coming to wave motion it is essential to understand the physics of oscillations of an isolated
body as well as of two or more bodies coupled together. This course is therefore divided into two blocks.
Block 1 deals with the study of oscillations of isolated as well as coupled systems. The effect of damping
and/or an external harmonic force are discussed here. Block 2 deals with wave motion. The vocabulary
of wave motion, reflection, transmission and refraction of waves are discussed in detail. Superposition
of waves can give rise to beats, stationary waves, interference or diffraction. These have been discussed
with particular emphasis on sound waves. .
