MODULE NO.

PROBLEM NO. 1 ( TOPIC: WORKING STRESS DESIGN)

Design a section of a concrete beam reinforced for tension only. The beam is
simply supported on a span of 6 m and carries a load of 18KN/m, including its own
weight. Use ACI specifications with fc=17.2 Mpa, fs=124 Mpa, n=12. Assume b=0.5d.
Compute the effective depth of the beam and the number of steel bars needed (use 25
mm).

Ans: 484 mm; n=4 pcs.

PROBLEM NO. 2 (TOPIC: INVESTIGATION ANALYSIS)

Calculate the moment capacity using the following given:

n=10

As=3-25 mm

b=300 mm

d=400 mm

fc=28 Mpa

Ans: Mn=102.72 KN.m

PROBLEM NO. 3 ( TOPIC: TRANSFORMED AREA METHOD)

A rectangular reinforced concrete beam with of 300 mm and effective depth of

600 mm is subjected to a service bending moment of 200 KN.m. the beam is reinforced
with 4-32mm bars. The modular ratio n=8. Calculate the distance of the neutral axis
kd, the maximum stress in concrete and the compressive force in concrete.

Ans: kd=x=246.33 mm; fc=10.45 Mpa
