The 7 Chakras and How to Open
Them
Prev post1 of 3Next

According to Hinduism and Buddhism, a chakra means an energy point or node in

the subtle body. There are several chakras in the body through which the life force or
vital energy moves. These vast pools of energy govern the psychological qualities of
a person.

Among the several chakras, there are seven main chakras four in the upper body
that control the mental properties and three in the lower body that control the
instinctual properties. These chakras are arranged vertically along the axial channel.

1. Muladhara (Root Chakra)

2. Svadhishthana (Sacral Chakra)
3. Manipura (Solar Plexus Chakra)
4. Anahata (Heart Chakra)
5. Vishuddha (Throat Chakra)
6. Ajna (Third-Eye Chakra)
7. Sahasrara (Crown Chakra)

The chakras are usually connected with a certain color as well as with some part of
consciousness.

A proper balance of all the chakras is important, as it contributes to a persons well-

being. If the chakras are not balanced, peace with oneself cannot be achieved.

Many times, some of the chakras are not open all the way, which can lead to
illness or dissatisfaction in life. This is when you need to open the chakras. This
can be done using mudras, which are special hand positions that have the power to
send more energy to particular chakras.
To enhance the effect of mudras, some particular sounds are also chanted. When
chanted, they cause a resonation in the body that can be felt at the chakra for which
they are meant.

Here are the details of the 7 chakras and how to open them.

1. Muladhara (Root Chakra)

Muladhara, or the Root chakra, portrays the flower lotus with four petals. This
chakras color is red and it is located at the perineum, the base of the spine in the
tailbone area.

This chakra is concerned with instinct, security and survival and also basic human
potentiality. It also has a relation to the sense of smell.
The Root chakra relates to the gonads and the adrenal medulla, which triggers the
fight-or-flight response when survival is under threat.

Those who are nervous or scared often must open this chakra to induce the feeling
of stability and security.

Tips to open the Root chakra:

1. Ground yourself by standing up straight and relaxed for several minutes.

2. After grounding for several minutes, sit cross-legged.
3. Allow the tips of your thumb and index finger to touch gently, in a peaceful
motion.
4. Now, concentrate on the Root chakra.
5. Chant the sound LAM, silently yet clearly.
6. Keep on taking deep breaths until you are completely relaxed.

Other tips:

The Root chakra represents the color red, hence from clothing to decorative items,
keep the color red in mind. Wearing a garnet stone as well as eating red-colored
fruits and vegetables, such as apples, beetroots and tomatoes, will also help.
You can also try yoga poses like the Mountain Pose, Standing Forward Bend, and
Sun Salutation to help balance your root chakra.

2. Svadhishthana (Sacral Chakra)

Svadhishthana, also known as the Sacral chakra, portrays a white lotus within which
is a crescent moon with six vermilion or orange petals.

This chakra is located at the lower abdomen, about two inches below the navel (belly
button) and two inches in. The color of this chakra is orange.

The Sacral chakra is concerned with emotion and represents desire, pleasure,
sexuality, procreation and creativity.

This chakra corresponds to the male testes or the female ovaries that produce the
various sex hormones involved in the reproductive cycle. It is also related to, more
generally, the genitourinary system and the adrenals.

As this chakra controls your feelings and sexuality, by opening it you can learn to be
open to people and be passionate about your relationship with your partner. Plus, an
imbalance in this chakra can contribute to compulsive or impulsive behavior.
Tips to open the Sacral chakra:

1. Sit on your knees, with your back straight but relaxed.

2. Lay your hands in your lap, palms ups.
3. Put the left hand underneath the right hand, with the left palm touching the
back fingers of the right hand.
4. Allow the tips of the thumbs to touch gently.
5. Now, concentrate on the Sacral chakra.
6. Silently, yet clearly, chant the sound VAM until you are completely relaxed.

Other tips:

The color of this chakra is orange, so try wearing clothes in different shades of
orange. Try to use the same color for decorating your home and office. Also, include
orange-colored fruits and vegetables in your diet.

To help open this chakra, you can also perform yoga poses like the Pigeon Pose,
Reclined Cobbler Pose, and Frog Pose.

3. Manipura (Solar Plexus Chakra)

Manipura, also known as the Solar Plexus or Navel chakra, is located at the upper
abdomen in the stomach area, right in between your rib cage.

The Solar Plexus chakra is symbolized by a downward-pointing triangle with 10

petals, along with the color yellow. The color of this chakra is yellow.
This chakra is related to the metabolic and digestive systems. The key issues
controlled by this chakra are personal power, fear, anxiety and introversion.

This chakra corresponds to the islets of Langerhans, groups of cells in the pancreas,
as well as the outer adrenal glands and the adrenal cortex.

Those who have low self-esteem and confidence can benefit by opening this chakra.
If you are indecisive or timid, try opening this chakra.

Tips to open the Solar Plexus chakra:

1. Sit on your knees, with your back straight but relaxed.

2. Put your hands in front of your stomach, slightly below your Solar Plexus.
3. Allow your fingers to join at their tops, all pointing away from you.
4. Keep the thumbs crossed and straighten the other fingers.
5. Now, concentrate on the Solar Plexus chakra.
6. Silently, yet clearly, chant the sound RAM until you are completely relaxed.

Other tips:

As this chakra is connected with the color yellow, decorating your surroundings
keeping the yellow color in mind is very helpful. Adding lemon to your drinking
water as well as eating yellow fruits and vegetables is recommended. A bright yellow
citrine crystal is also helpful.

You can also try some yoga poses such as Full Boat Pose and Sun Salutation for
this chakra.

Vishuddha, also known as the Throat chakra, is related to communication and
growth through expression. Physically it governs communication, emotionally it

top of the head, in the same place as the soft spot on a newborns head. It is

Chakra Healing: 9
Amazing Ways To Clean
And Heal Your Chakras
Even though there are 100s of Chakras there are seven main ones that are typically
dealt with when it comes to healing. The Chakras begin at the bottom area of your
spinal cord at the point of the coccyx bone and then travel along up the spinal cord
to the very top part of your head.
These are the Root Chakra, Sacral Chakra, Solar Plexus Chakra, Heart Chakra,
Throat Chakra, Third Eye Chakra, and Crown Chakra.
The goal behind all spiritual practices is to reach a place of balance between spirit,
body, earth and health, universality and grounding. Below are a few
fantastic techniques used to clean and heal the Chakras.
1) Chakra Meditation
It is recommended to approach healing from 2 directions when it comes to Chakra
meditation:
Focusing On The Level Of Cause
Unless the cause level has not been addressed, effects such as feeling distressed or
upset inside the body, emotions and body will persist. For this reason Chakra
meditation should involve any type of meditation that assists in bringing attention
to yourself to a state of pure awareness.
Focusing On the Levels Of Effects
The next meditation involves other variations of Chakra meditation used to ease
the feelings or effects of being isolated and separated opposed to the Whole that
we actually are. Some of these meditations include: The Wellbeing Boat, Inner
Vision Meditation and White Light Chakra Meditation.
If you are new to Chakra Meditation, a guided meditation may be the right fit for
you. Put headphones on, sit down and follow the guide's voice and instructions.
There are guided meditations for every taste - you could start with this one:
2) Affirmations
One of the powerful tools used for Chakra healing are affirmations. Affirmations
are positive statements that have the function of strengthening and healing
damaged part of ourselves. When working with affirmations, we are able to focus
on various aspects, one at a time. Here are some examples of affirmations for the
various Chakras:

1. The Root Chakra I am filled with humility. I am enough as I am.

2. The Sacral Chakra I am radiant, beautiful and strong and enjoy a healthy
and passionate life
3. The Solar Plexus I accept myself completely. I accept that I have
strengths and I accept that I have weaknesses.
4. The Heart Chakra Love is the answer to everything in life, and I give and
receive love unconditionally
5. The Throat Chakra My thoughts are positive, and I always express myself
truthfully and clearly
6. The Third Eye Chakra I am wise, and I understand the true meaning of
lifes situations
7. The Crown Chakra I am complete and one with the divine energy

3) Balancing through Massage

Massage is another common technique used for Chakra healing below is the
massage methods used on each of the Chakras:
The Root Chakra
Massaging the gluteal muscles, legs and feet encourages energy flow better known
as prana in this region.
The Sacral Chakra
Myofascial release for the hip flexors along with releasing the iliopsoas muscle
helps to release tension in the hips. This helps them to open up for energy flow to
the sacral Chakra.
The Solar Plexus
This area is massaged by applying oils to the abdomen area using clockwise
directions around the area of the navel. This encourages waste elimination and
improves the organ functions by bringing about conscious awareness to this
personal power center
The Heart Chakra
Massaging the area of the upper back and a gentle traction to the shoulder joint and
arm along with myofascial releases the pectoral muscles that assist in opening up
this particular Chakra region.
The Throat Chakra
Gentle neck traction and release of restricted fascia tissues that surrounds the back
and front of the neck is then followed by a gentle massage of the neck and the
attachments to the base of the head.
The Third Eye Chakra
The massage used for the Anja Chakra includes a massage technique known as
brow stripping that includes the muscles in the jaw area, temples and nasal
sinuses.
The Crown Chakra
A scalp massage furthers the connection to the Crown Chakra followed by hair
pulls and cervical traction to release cranial-tissue adhesion's.
4) Color Vibration
When exposed to different types of colors that all have a different vibration, our
physical state, emotions and moods can be changed. We are able to rebalance the
Chakras by exposing our body to different colors in our homes, our food and the
clothes that we wear. Other ways to absorb colors is to wear color glasses that
absorb the vibrations needed in our bodies.
Every Chakra has a different color associated - you can learn more at this 7
Chakras overview.
5) Health through Music
Every Chakra responds to various Chakra Sound Healing Frequencies. Some of the
popular techniques include the Solfeggio that is music frequencies used to create
healing sounds. Another type of music commonly used would be the Isochronic
Chakra Suite that are brainwave entrainment techniques that include Tibetan
singing bowls combined with Solfeggio frequencies.
6) Professional Energy Healers
Professional energy healers offer services that examine a persons energy levels in
their Chakra system as well as locate the causes of blockages. After a thorough
examination they are able to offer suitable healing treatments in regards to Chakra
healing.
7) Chakra Stones
The Chakra stones are known as healing crystals that contain specific colors and
vibrations. Every Chakra has a specified color, and this same color can be used in
Chakra healing. However, even though the majority of stones with a certain color
will be used to heal a specific Chakra, there are a few stones that can be utilized to
heal multiple Chakras i.e. Clear quartz.
8) Yoga
When the wheel-of-energy or a Chakra is stuck it can be beneficial to release the
energy or prana using movement. Yoga postures have been recognized as a
fantastic technique to release stuck or stagnant energy out of the body. This
encourages the flow of vital and fresh energy back into the body through breath
and postures.
9) Essential Oils
Essential oils also form an important part of Chakra healing and are generally used
combined with massage techniques. Below is a list of recommended oils for each
Chakra:

1st Chakra: St. Johns Wort, Angelica, Patchouli and Frankincense

2nd Chakra: Orange, Neroli, Clove, Juniper and Rosemary
3rd Chakra: Lemon, Rosemary, Peppermint, Yarrow and Marjoram
4th Chakra: Melissa, Rosewood, Basil and Rose
5th Chakra: Lemongrass, Sage and Blue chamomile
6th Chakra: Clary sage, Elemi, Spruce and Lavender
7th Chakra: Geranium, Myrrh, Gotu Kola and Sandalwood

Other tips:

To open this chakra, place violet flowers or decorative items around the house or
office. You can also wear amethyst and eat foods with a violet color, such as figs.

Practicing gratitude also helps open this chakra.

Yoga poses like Sun Salutation and Warrior Pose are also beneficial in clearing this
chakra.

Bach Flower Remedies and the Chakras The Chakra

BACH FLOWER
REMEDIES AND THE CHAKRAS
Dr. Edward Bach discovered the Original Bach Flower Remedies which is a system
of 38 Flower Remedies that corrects emotional imbalances where negative emotions
are replaced with positive. They are a form of vibrational (Energy) medicine. The
signature of the vibrations of the essence resonates at a deep emotional level and
are believed to bring balance and harmony.

The Bach Flower Remedies work in conjunction with herbs, homeopathy and
medications and are safe for everyone, including children, pets, elderly and even
plants. Although it is stated that they are safe for pregnant women, I personally
prefer to recommend seeking professional advice before taking any form of
medication whether it be natural, alternative or conventional. They are suspended
within an alcohol base so this must be taken into consideration for those with
sensitivity or religious reasons to avoid alcohol.

Healing & Balancing the Emotional Body

When I see clients for coaching, healing or reading their auric

field, I often recommend the Bach Flower remedies when I sense emotional
blockages in their energy field. Below is the list that I use when I intuit any
imbalance emanating from within the chakras. I will often select two remedies and
combine together. Each chakra has a complimentary chakra in healing
practice: The Root/The Heart, The Sacral/The Throat and The Solar Plexus/The
Crown (and 3rd Eye). Therefore, I select one remedy from each of the compliments
to bring balance and harmony in the emotional body. For example, if I detect
imbalance in the Throat Chakra I will determine which remedy best suits (sometimes
with the use of a pendulum) and then select a remedy for the Sacral Chakra. This
will from the prescription for the healing and balancing of the emotional block.
How to take the Remedies
You can make up your own Bach Flower treatment bottle by adding 2 drops of each
of the selected Bach Flower Remedies to a 30 ml/1 oz mixing bottle. You can
combine up to 6 or 7 Remedies in a treatment bottle. Or just select two remedies
and take directly from the bottles as indicated below.

As preservative (optional) you can add 1 teaspoon brandy, apple cider vinegar or
vegetable glycerin.

You then fill the bottle to the top with water and from this mixture you take 4 drops, 4
times a day until you feel better. I recommend taking the drops over a 10 day period,
however, if you wake up one day feeling a bit out of sort, you can add 1-2 drops of a
remedy or more, to a drink and take small sips throughout the day until you feel
better.

Combining just two of the remedies you can take them as often as needed, either by
adding 2-4 drops directly in your mouth, under the tongue, or adding 2-4 drops in a
glass of water and drink it slowly over a period of time.
