3. A welding apparatus for a drilling rig uses acetylene (C2H2 ) which is

purchased in steel cylinders containing 20 lb of gas, and costing $4.50

exclusive of the cylinder. If a welder is using 200 cu. ft. per day

measured at 10 oz gauge and 85 F, What is the daily cost for

acetylene? What is the cost per MCF at 14.7 psia and 60 F?

(Ans $3.14, $15.40)

4. A tank with a volume of 40 cu.ft. is filled with carbon dioxide and air

mixture. The pressure within the tank is 30.0 psia at 70 F. It is know that

2.0 lb of carbon dioxide was placed in the tank. Assune that air is 80%

nitrogen and 20% oxygen and use the ideal gas law. Calculate:
(a) Mas of the air in the tank. (Ans 1.292)

(b) Mole fraction of each constituent.

(Ans N2 = 0.6279, O2 = 0.1565, CO2 = 0.2152)

B5826025
(c) Volume percent of each constituent. (Ans N2 = 62.79, O2 = 15.65, CO2 =

21.52)

(d) Mass percent of each constituent. (Ans N2 = 54.83, O2 = 15.65, CO2 =

29.52)

(e) Average molecular weight of the mixture. (Ans 32.08)

B5826025
(f) Specific gravity of the mixture. (Ans 1.108)

(g) Density of the mixture at 20 psia at 70 F and at 14.7 psia at 60 F.

(Ans 0.113 lb/cu. ft and 0.085 lb/cu. ft)

5. A tank with volume of 1 ft3 is filled with air compressed to a gauge

pressure of 50 psi. The temperature in tank is 70 F. Calculate the

density of this air assuming an ideal gas behavior.(Ans0.3296 lb/cu. ft)

6. Aerosol cans are prominently labeled with a warning such as Do not

incinerate this container when empty. Assume that you did not notice

this warning and tossed the empty aerosol can (0.025 mol in 5 cu. ft.,

initially at 15.6 C and 5.3 psig internal pressure) into a fire at 750 C.
What would be the pressure inside the can (if it did not explode)?

(Ans Pf = 70.83 psia)

7. Charles used a balloon with a volume of 1,100 cu. ft. for his initial ascent

and that the balloon contained 1.23x103 mol of H2 gas initially at 30 C

and 30 psia. Suppose that Gay-Lussac had also used this balloon for his

record-breaking ascent to 23,000 ft and that the pressure and

temperature at that altitude were 15 psia and 30 C, respectively. To

what volume would the balloon have had to expand to hold the same

amount of hydrogen gas at the higher altitude?

(Ans Vf = 1,764.84 cu. ft.)

of its container is increased by moving a piston from 3 cu.ft. to 12.4

cu.ft. What would the final temperature (in Celsius degree) be if the

original temperature was 90.0 C.

(Ans Tf = 1,844.22 R = 1384.22 F = 751.2 C)
