Dear RCHS Advisory Board:

The act of rape is heinous, and so is the culture that ignores it. In society and culture today, rape
is ignored and normalized to the point where it has become a subgroup of American culture.
Music, movies, television shows, celebrities, law enforcement, and even the education system
have all aided in the desensitization of our society to rape and muddled the true meanings of
consent and rape. Over the years, this plague of rape culture has only grown and will continue
to grow unless the issue is taken into account. A good way to combat rape culture is through
education. In the public school systems of the present, sex education is somewhat glossed over
in health classes. Students are not taught about safe or consensual sex. This lack of proper sex
and consent education cultivates a population of people who know little or nothing about what
consensual sex is. It is important to educate the public, starting in our schools, about safe and
consensual sex. Too many people have been victims of sexual assault, something must be
done. That is why I have chosen this topic for Capstone Experience project.

In this paper, I will examine rape culture and how better sex education in public school systems
can aid in the destruction of rape culture. When dealing with sex and consent education in
schools, many worry about what age the material will be presented to and what the material will
cover. I will explain how sex and consent education can be incorporated in middle school and
high school settings in an age appropriate manner. I will also explain the benefits of early and
consistent sex education and how it will lead to a safer society.

For my product, I am planning to hold an informational seminar for members of the public to
explain what rape culture is and how proper consent education can help prevent rape. I also
plan to propose a better form of sex and consent education to the school board. This will be
challenging because I have never presented to a large group of people, and I have never
proposed something to any type of government or education board. I have not yet found an
expert, but I am looking for an expert who works in either the public health field or social
services.
