Internal conflict is when a character has a struggle within him/herself
External conflict is when a character has a struggle with another character or outside force/being.

Section 4: Select two quotations that describe crucial conflict in your work. Explain what the
quotations reveal about the internal or external conflict (be specific in identifying them) that the
protagonist experiences and describe the significance of this conflict to the meaning of the work.
Style and Theme Assignment (4 and 7)
1. Select three quotations as examples the authors style. You should focus on quotes that show how the point
of view, diction, tone, allusion, figurative language, imagery, repetition, or any other literary device is being
used to make the theme or tone clear. Explain how the style of the quotation enhances the meaning of the
quotation.
2. Select three quotations as examples reveal the growth and development of a character from your work. This
should be quotes that focus on figurative language (metaphor, simile, hyperbole, understatement, symbolism,
imagery, personification, allusion) from at least three different sections of the novel. Explain how the authors
use of style gives insight into the character.
3. Choose a passage from the novel in which the diction or imagery is particularly vividone that describes
either a character or an aspect of setting. Then, rewrite the passage with the intent of changing the tone or
mood completely.
4. Select two quotations that most clearly reveal the theme in your work. In your analysis of each quotation,
write a theme statement (authors message) and explain how the quotation reveals the meaning and relates to
the protagonists growth.
Characterization Assignment
1. Identify the main character of your novel.
2. Make a list of traits your character displays. Consider the following questions.
a. What was your first impression of the character? What gave you that impression?
b. Did your impression change as the story progressed? What incidents in the story changed your
impression?
c. What does the character look like? Be specific.
d. What does the character believe?
e. Which of the characters actions are key to understanding his/her motivations? And values? Do
the character's words and actions match?
f. What other choices could the character have made in the story? Was her/his behavior
inevitable?
g. Does the character change from the beginning to the end of the stor? Explain that change.
3. Narrow down:Identify three traits from your list that you think are especially important. These traits
should reveal significant elements of the characters personality, beliefs, or values.

4. Making Conclusions: The goal here is to figure out why the traits they chose about their character are
important.

d. What do these traits reveal about the character that might also be true of human beings in
general?
