What should he / she do? (Give at least 5 suggestions)

1
Please Help me and My Family; My family doesnt get along. It's like we all hate each
other. It's my mom, me, my two brothers and a sister. I am the oldest. We all have certain
problems: My mom wants to quit smoking so she is really stressed out. I am really selfish
(I just can't help it). One of my brothers is too bossy. He thinks he is better than the rest of
us and that he is the only one who helps my mom. My other brother is kind of abusive
and depressed. He always starts fights and he's really spoiled (my mom doesn't yell at
him for doing things wrong and when she does, he laughs at her); My sister (who's 7)
makes messes and doesn't clean them up. I really want to help because I don't like being
upset all of the time and having everyone hate everyone else. Even when we start to get
along, someone will say something to upset someone else. Please help me and my family.

Hates School: I hate school. I cannot stand my school so I skip it almost every day.
Luckily, I am a smart person and I'm in all of the advanced classes and don't have
reputation as a rebel. Only the people who really know me know about my strange
feelings. My parents don't care - they don't even mention it if I don't go to school. What I
end up doing is sleeping all day and then staying up all night talking to my friends. I get
behind in my work and when I try to go back to school I get insulted from my teachers
and friends. I just get so depressed when I think about it. I have given up on trying to go
back and now am considering dropping out altogether, but I really don't want to do that
because I realize it would ruin my life. I don't want to go back at all but I also don't want
it to ruin my life. I am so confused and I have really tried to go back and just can't take it.
What should I do? Please help.

Janets Difficult Situation: Janet was employed as a graphic designer at a very

successful advertising company. She had worked there for two years, when she was
offered a promotion to become head of the graphic solutions department. She was
obviously very happy when she heard of her promotion. However, she was also rather
concerned as she had also recently found out that she was a serious heart patient. In the
past, other women who had had the same problem found it difficult to continue working
full time. Later that day, she asked her husband what he thought she should do. He felt
that she should first accept the promotion and then, a few months later, tell her employers
about her problem. In this way, her husband felt, she would not jeopardize her promotion.
Janet wasn't so sure this was a good suggestion, as she felt that it might be dishonest of
her to not let her employers know about her condition. She telephoned her best friend,
who had also had the same problem previously, and asked for her advice. Cheryl, her best
friend assured Janet to trust her husband's judgment.

Disappointed, Janet went back to work and did her absolute best to keep up with the
work. Unfortunately, the workload just continued to grow. Later that month, she received
a call from the personnel department and was told to come speak to the personnel
director. The personnel director told her that, due to her inability to keep up with the
demands of her job, they were going to have to let her go. Janet couldn't believe what she
was hearing. She asked him why, if a few months earlier they had promoted her for her
excellence, they had now decided to let her go. It seemed ridiculous. He said that he was
truly sorry, but that they had no other choice and asked her to gather her things and leave.
Janet is lost. Please help her.

5. Offering help :We often find ourselves in a situation that requires offering help or assistance
to someone. The situation may present itself as an absolute necessity or one of simply polite
behavior. In either case, knowing what to say in those situations can be quite helpful. Look at the
expressions below that cover such circumstances.

8. Different situations are given to you. Read and decide how you can help. Write a
single expression that you can use to offer help in each case.

1. At the bus stop your friend has brought a bundle of books that are too
heavy for him to hold.
2. Your mother is sick and she has difficulty cooking dinner today.

3. Mr. Sam has come to your town for the very first time and he doesnt
know his way around the place.

4. Your father has been trying to fix the car all evening and he seems quite
tired now.

5. Ben is an old man and you usually help him out in things but today he
seems to be holding a huge bag of newspapers which he has to take to the
lobby.

3
Making complaints; There are a number of formulas used when complaining in
English. It's important to remember that a direct complaint or criticism in English can
sound rude or aggressive. It's best to mention a problem in an indirect manner. Here are
some of the most common usages:
I'm sorry to have to say this but...
I'm sorry to bother you, but...
Maybe you forgot to...
I think you might have forgotten to...
Excuse me if I'm out of line, but...
There may have been a misunderstanding about...

9. TASK: Reading different complaints and offering solutions: At work place

sometimes employees complain. Ignoring employee complaints will only increase their
complaining. What do employees generally complain about? Lets read and see

a. Women Complaining :I manage a small group of women in a family run business.

I have managed people for over 25 years. I still find the problem with women acting and
complaining about each other as if they are in their teens. I am sure this goes on in other
groups. Most of the complaints come from groups that are in the 25-30 year old range.
Do they just have a maturity issue? Can you please offer any solution?
Solution:
b. General Manager complaining :My staff constantly complains about faults, yet
they offer no real solutions, just suggestions. One complains about the office timings and
the other wants to have an increase in the pay. They complain about the transport and
about the work place environment. Can you offer any solution?
Solution:
c. Employee complaining :We complain about our manager. She is ALWAYS on the
phone, shows up late, and doesn't care if others get breaks or lunches. She just takes up
space. Please give a solution.
Solution:
d. Mr. Shan Complaining: Employees in my company are always complaining about
parking. This is Murree and the winters are hard, so everyone wanted a spot close to the
door. Of course, that's not possible, so there were always people coming up with crazy
ideas to make parking spots more "fair."
Solution:
e. Other Employee ;I am now facing a situation where a couple of employees are
unhappy with the output of another, creating negativity among staff and customers. What
should be done?
Solution:
f. Unfair in the workplace; We are never told that we are doing a good job from our
manager. Instead, she will let us know what we have done wrong. There is also favoritism
in the workplace. On a scale of 1 to 10 the employee morale is 1.
Solution:
g. Communication :At our company, the lack of communication explains much of our
complaints. At the occasional staff meeting, communication is stressed and then the next
day, there is a lack of it. We also experienced a lot of lay-offs in September that cut our
staff in half and what remains is fear. Without communication, you lack a lot. What do
you suggest?
