2017: GVI Laos

Monthly Achievement Report: Fundraising for the Nan District Learning Centre

Objectives:
To develop relationships with educational institutions and temples with the aim of increasing their ability to provide
educational opportunities
To work with the GVI Trust to provide educational sponsorships
To provide educational opportunities to all students in the local community, regardless of socio-economic status, eth-
nicity and gender

This month, GVI Laos raised $1,092 USD to help a learning centre in Nan District keep its doors open. This learning centre is one
of four associated with The Luang Prabang Childrens Library; a long standing partner of GVI Laos. The Nan District Learning
Centre is located two hours away from our base in Luang Prabang. Due to its rural location, it is one of the very few of its type in
the district. The money we raised will help provide important learning opportunities for rural students to which they may not
otherwise have access. Not only will these students be able to continue their education, but the two dedicated teachers will also
keep their jobs and be able to continue to support their families.

To raise funds, we held a GVI Trust Challenge: The GVI Laos Scavenger Hunt around Luang Prabang! Current volunteers were
broken up into two teams. They then followed various clues to different locations and temples around the picturesque Luang
Prabang town. GVI Laos staff were stationed at each location handing out sequential clues. One team struggled and ended up
finding clues out of order, but it must have been a good tactic because they won! Each member of the winning team received a
free breakfast at a neighboring guesthouse for their efforts.

We also gained support for our cause when a GVI Laos volunteer generously offered to shave his head for donations! Novice
Monks shave their heads once a month on the full moon in order to cleanse and have a fresh start for the new month. In order
to bring awareness to our fundraiser, GVI Laos volunteer Max offered to have his Novice Monk students shave his head at the
full moon. This was a lot of fun for everyone involved and helped push us over the $1000 USD mark in our fundraiser.

We couldnt have raised this much without the help of our supporters, alumni, and donors. We will continue to raise funds in
the future for this wonderful learning centre that increases educational opportunities for rural Laos students!
