Burriville, RI Assistant Captain Scotty Cuthrell (Junior) lead the way with
three points (1G, 2A) as the Bison defeated the Golden Bears of Western New
England University on Saturday 3 to 1.
The Bison headed into the matchup on February 4th battling for the number
one position in the CCC with rival Endicott who are ranked 10th in the country.
Nichols was looking to get back on the right track after a disappointing 4 to 4
draw with Becker earlier in the week.
We let off the gas on Tuesday and allowed Becker back in the game said
Cuthrell. We shouldve ran away with that game but they fought back and
we escaped with a point Cuthrell added. His goal late in the third period on
Tuesday tied the game at 4 for the Bison.
The Bison got on the board early verse WNE thanks to a power play goal
from junior Cody Rodgers. Cuthrell took the puck off the half wall and slid a
no look pass to Rodgers who put it in the back of the net before the goalie
could even react. Red Shirt Senior Pat Salkind stopped all seven shots he
faced in the opening frame.
The second period was extremely chippy. With 12 total penalties (6 for each
side). The second period looked like playoff hockey, very physical with a
scrum after every whistle. Halfway through the period Cuthrell head manned
the puck to J.B. Baker, who leads the team in points with 31. Baker beat his
defender and put it past the Golden Bears goaltender to make the game 2 to
0.
The remainder of the period was just missed opportunity after missed
opportunity for the Bison. Freshman Nick Mangone hit the crossbar on a
shorthanded chance early in the period. Fellow freshman Vincent Crivello
almost put away an impossible shot short side on the Golden Bears
goaltender.
The bison started the final frame on the power play thanks to a slashing
penalty by WNE with about a minute remaining in the second. The Bison
made quick work of the power play, scoring 21 seconds into the period.
Matt Menta (sophomore) made a slick pass through two defenders to Cuthrell
who made a move to his backhand and beat the keeper to add to their lead.
We played our game today which is why we came out with the W said
Menta. Its great to get a conference win especially on Senior Night he
added.
The only mistake made the entire game by the Bison was when they failed to
get the puck out of the zone and allowed WNE to maintain pressure and end
up on the bored with about 6 minutes left in the game.
After that mental lapse the Bison really turned on the intensity in the
defensive zone and only allowed a few shots in the final 5 minutes. That late
goal was really a wakeup call for our team said assistant coach Dan
Pelletier, Especially after Tuesdays game we need to finish teams off, we
cant let them back into the game.
Senior Pat Salkind finished the game with 23 saves on what is most likely his
final start as a Bison. The Springfield, VA native has spent the majority of his
Nichols career as a backup. He backed up four-year starter and All-American
goaltender Alex Larson for three years. Red shirted his senior season and has
backed up junior Colin Brennan for the majority of this season.
The Bison held on to defeat the Golden Bears 3 to 1 and look to use this
victory as momentum towards their final away matchup of the regular
season against conference foe Salve Regina on Wednesday night.
