The Place Called Calvary
The Place Called Calvary
The Place Called Calvary
It is commonly understood that the Lenten Season is a time when many Christians observe a period
of fasting, self-denial and spiritual discipline. The purpose is to set aside time for reflection on the
life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As the weeks go by and the Lenten Season draws to a
close many believers will begin to shift their focus to the Place Called Calvary!
Now what makes Calvary a such a special place?
After all, there were many places that played important and significant roles in Jesus ministry.
There was Bethlehem, Nazareth and Jerusalem. And let us not forget the shores of the Sea of
Galilee, the Pool of Bethesda and the various homes that Jesus visited. Every step Jesus took, every
place he visited lead him to the place called Calvary.
Allow me to lift up a few brief points why I have come to understand that Calvary is a special place:
Calvary was a place of Punishment: Jesus willingly subjected himself to an unjust form of punishment. The Roman
Empire had adopted and perfected the practice of crucifixion as a form of capital punishment for convicted criminals.
According to Stephen Mansfield, the New York Times bestselling author of the book entitled Killing Jesus, the
crucifixion of criminals was the perfect blend of death, vengeance, spectacle and terror.
Calvary was a place of Pain: Jesus suffered at Calvary. He experienced unbelievable torment and tremendous pain as he
hung on the cross. The word crucifixion is defined as a method of slow and painful execution in which the victim is tied or
nailed to a large wooden cross and left to hang for several days until eventual death from exhaustion and asphyxiation.
Calvary was a place of Pardon: Jesus set the stage for our salvation and pardon at the place called Calvary. Some people
who lived during the time period of the crucifixion may have misunderstood or even questioned as to why Jesus sacrificed
his life. Thank goodness, John 3:16 has blessed us with divine insight as to why the place called Calvary is so special: For
God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him may not perish but may have
eternal life.
In 1919 as a statement of faith, Alfred Barrett wrote the lyrics to the song entitled Pardon on Calvary. In doing so, he
eloquently and profoundly lifted up the Place called Calvary:
O ye who have wandered in sorrow away,
Theres a pardon on Calvary;
A pardon to sinners is offered today.
Theres a pardon on Calvary;
A pardon of love from the Father above. Since Jesus died on the cross for us all,
Theres pardon on Calvary;
Your hearts can be cleansed if you come at His call.
Theres pardon on Calvary.

BE JUST. BE GREEN
From the United Methodist Book of Discipline
All creation is the Lords, and we are responsible for the ways in which we use and abuse it. Water, air, soil, min-
erals, energy resources, plants, animal life, and space are to be valued and conserved because they are Gods crea-
tion and not solely because they are useful to human beings. God has granted us stewardship of creation. We
should meet these stewardship duties through acts of loving care and respect. (Social Principles, 160)
United Methodist Women calls for sound stewardship of the earth and environmentally friendly lifestyles
that preserve creation for the benefit of present and future generations.
In line with one of the current National Office Focus Issues and one of this years studies,
Climate Justice, our Mission u is moving closer to Be Just. Be Green. We will be minimizing
our use of non-recyclable products and taking other steps to protect the environment. Please
be planning to bring your own refillable beverage container.
