ADVANCEMENTS IN CONCRETE DESIGN:

SELF-CONSOLIDATING/SELF-COMPACTING CONCRETE

What is SCC or Self-Consolidating or Compacting Concrete?

SCC is defined as a concrete that is able to flow under its own weight and
completely fill the formwork, while maintaining homogeneity even in the presence
of congested reinforcement, and then consolidate without the need for vibrating
compaction.
The noise associated with the compaction of conventional concrete can be
significant. SCC affords quiet casting, and the environmental loadings from noise
are therefore reduced. It also eliminates the issue of blood circulatory problems
caused by the vibration of concrete.
SCC affords the designer greater flexibility in designing complex shapes. It is
independent of the quality of mechanical vibration and therefore provides
homogeneity leading to improved durability and potential for reuse.
Why use SCC?
1. To shorten construction period
2. To assure compaction in the structure: especially in confined zones where
vibrating compaction is difficult, and
3. To eliminate noise due to vibration: effective especially at concrete
products plants.

Problems with Conventional Concrete

Requirement of skilled worker for compaction in conventional concrete

Requiring days and additional cost in the project to compact and vibrate
concrete
Aforementioned health issue concerning blood circulation
Challenging or difficult to compact for structures like:
> Underwater concreting
> Cast in situ pile foundation
> Columns with congested reinforcement

Requirements/ Standards for SCC

Is it cheaper than conventional Concrete?

Data indicate that the share of application of SCC in precast concrete industry is
more than three times higher than that in the ready-mixed concrete industry. This is
attributable to the higher cost of SCC. The estimated average price of SCC supplied
by the RMC industry in Japan was 1.5 times that of the conventional concrete in the
year 2002. Research studies in Japan are also promoting new types of applications
with SCC, such as in lattice type structures, casting without pump, and tunnel
linings.

FILLING ABILITY
Slump Test. T50 cm slump test, V funnel test
ASTM C1611 - Standard Test Method for Slump Flow of Self-Consolidating
Concrete
A "slump" is the diameter of the upper face of a concrete mix that has
been laid out by a steel cone. ASTM C1611 states
PASSING ABILITY
J-ring test, U-box, L-box
ASTM C1621

ASTM C1621 (2009) The test method is for a sample of fresh concrete
to be placed into the commonly used slump cone, either in the normal
upright or inverted position located centrally within the J-ring. The concrete is
placed in a single lift without any tamping or vibration as for the slump flow test.
SEGREGATION RESISTANCE
Settlement column test, Sieve stability test, Penetration test
ASTMC1712 - Standard Test Method for Rapid Assessment of Static
Segregation Resistance of Self-Consolidating Concrete Using Penetration
Test.
Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) must have the ability to flow under
its own weight, to pass between reinforcing bars or other obstacles without
segregation, and not segregate during or after casting.
TYPICAL MIX PROPORTION VALUES

APPLICATIONS/USES
Some famous buildings that utilize SCC are below:
Akashi Kaikyo Bridge - anchor blocks, 180,000 cubic yards of
Burj Khalifa The SCC was used throughout the structure,
and pumped 166 stories from the
bottom. The slump flow was 24 to 28
in.
Trump Tower, Chicago Illinois - 198 ft (60 m) in length, 60 ft (18 m) in
width and 10 ft (3 m) in depth, and required approximately 5,000 yd3
(3,800 m3 ) of concrete.
