Imagine a world were one could only become famous through epic
feats of strength and other heroic actions. By doing this we have imagined
the culture of the Anglo-Saxons. In the epic Beowulf, Beowulf, the
protagonist, embodies the values of the Anglo-Saxon culture creating himself
as an epic hero. By going into combat Beowulf is able to prove himself an
epic hero through his bravery and strength and use these innate virtues to
his advantage. Throughout the epic Beowulf is constantly relying on this
strength and bravery to assist him in the winning of his battles. In Beowulfs
battles with Grendel and Grendels mother Beowulf shows this unfeasible
strength and stunning bravery and by it defeats them both.
In his search for fame and honor, Beowulf arrives at Herot Hall to help
the King of the Danes, Hrothgar, by fighting the horrid monster Grendel who
had killed many of Hrothgars best men. In an epic leap of bravery, Beowulf
choses to fight Grendel without the use of any weapon, in order to increase
his honor. Saying, I have heard, too, that monsters scorn of men is so great
that he needs no weapons and fears none. Nor will I. My lord Higlac might
think less of me if I let my sword go were my feet were afraid to. (25) During
the battle Beowulf bravely and tactically waits, with no consideration of his
health, in tell the last possible moment in which he could survive then he
[Grendel] stepped to another still body, clutched at Beowulf with his claws.
(33) By waiting, Beowulf was able to place Grendel in a vulnerable position
and win the battle. Beowulfs actions showed great bravery one of the many
attributes of epic heroes and with his bravery Beowulf was able to defeat
Grendel.
Beowulfs battle with Grendel was not the only time that one of
Beowulfs natural traits assisted in his encounters with the monsters of the
world. In Beowulfs battle with Grendel Mother, Beowulfs implausible
strength aided him in his struggles. Then he saw, hanging on the wall, a
heavy sword, hammered by giants, strong and blessed with their magic, the
best of all weapons, but so massive that no ordinary man could lift, (41) in
the poem notice how it says the sword was too heavy for a normal man to
lift; yet Beowulf using his unfathomable strength can pick it up continue the
battle. This ability of unnatural strength often common among epic heroes
helped achieve Beowulfs goal of killing the vile creature that was Grendels
Mother. Without the giant sword Beowulf would have certainly perished on
page 40 this is evidenced when it says he was weary, that best and
strongest of soldiers his feet stumbled and in an instant she had him down,
held helpless. If the battle had continued much longer with Beowulf having
no weapon his exhaustion would definitely have killed him. Luckily, Beowulfs
heroic strength allowed him to win the battle and yet again prove himself an
epic hero.
