CHARACTER SKETCHES
Suyuan Woo

A Bridge is an example of character of Suyuan Woo. She didnt give up to find her
twin daughter and keep following her dreams to see them.

Suyuan Woo is a kind of person that did not easily to give up. She know her
limitations and capable to do things in life. She is a high standard person and active
seeking happiness in life. A strong, and resourceful women that never give up to find her
twin daughters. As a mother of Jing-mei she had also a negative attitude toward her
daughter, she keep finding faults of others and judge them for who they are. Example,
when she wants her Daughter Jing-mei to trained her to play piano and probably seeing
her daughter that have no good career at all. She always criticize other people
weaknesses and hurt the feelings of other people.

Suyuan Woo is the mother of Jing-mei. Suyuan Woo had been forced to
abandoned her twin daughter during the Japanese war. After the war, she had been
married to Canning Woo and emigrated to Canada and continuous to find her twin
daughter, but she had not found her twin daughters. In the end she had been died with
unfinished business left behind because of a sickness called cerebral aneurysm.

The quality of Suyuan Woo as a character she has positive and negative effect
outcome to other people, sometimes she s been a perfectionist and considered herself
as an outstanding person. Even though she has also a positive personality like being
generous to fine her twin daughters and try to make another determination about
herself.
Jing-mei Woo

Magnifying glass represent curiosity of Jing-mei finding the relationship or

connection with her mother and siblings past life.

She is the daughter of Suyuan Woo and Canning Woo. When her mother died
she is filled with misery, sadness, and depression. She tried to accept the fact that her
mother is dead. She also thought the negative part of her mother because she feels that
she is not yet enough and never satisfied with her. Jing-mei Woo doesnt know the
experiences of her mother in China and what are the difficulties or problems that her
mother facing. When she wanted to know about her mothers past, at the end she also
realizes that she loved her mother, understand and give importance to her. Jing-meis
path forward is to discover her mother at the same time try to accept herself.

Jing mei dosent fully understand what is her connection to her mother Suyuan
Woo and the life she left in China. Jing-mei had a very unhappy relationship with her
mother then she decided to finish what her mother started and continue finding her half
sisters. She went to China and discovers her mother true story and her long lasts
siblings.

Jing-mei doesnt recognize good quality in herself feels inadequate for this
mission, being afraid that she can never live up to her mother's expectations. She
admitted that she might become a decent panist in the future if she study hard. Jing-mei
is easily humiliated by those who possess greater self-confidence. She finds her identity
when she meets her twin half-sisters in China, after her mother's death.
An-Mei Hsu

The lamp represent An-Mei because of her knowledge and having moral
values dealing with other people.

An-Mei is raised by her grandparents and other relatives at a young age because
her mother Rose Jordan, was a pain-stricken widow who married man who already had
a three wives. Her mother is a concubine and a lowly fourth wife who lost her child to
the second wife, An-Mei becomes very difficult and unfortunate scenarios cause An-Mei
mother to kill herself, so that her children can live better.

An-Mei is the friend of Suyuan, the mother of Rose Jordan, and the wife of
George Hsu. She is intelligent, perceptive, and sensible. She has always understood
her position in life and acted according to her conscience. Like Suyuan, she suffered
greatly in her earlier life in China. As a child, she had been taken by her mother to the
house of Wu Tsing, where her mother was a concubine. Not wanting An-Mei to
experience a similar life, her mother kills herself to set An-Mei free. Her death instills
courage and strength in An-Mei. She is able to assert her identity and raise her voice
against exploitation.

An-Mei was very strong women she has always understood what is the meaning
of her life. She is very brilliant and open minded of what decision might good for her. As
a child of Rose Hsu Jordan, she doesnt want to experience in similar. She is a women
that have a big conscience and having moral values dealing with other people. Her faith
in her own powers is so unbreakable that she can never quite giving up.

Lindo Jong

A Firefly symbolizes perseverance and passionate love like Lindo Jong is a

devoted mother that enlightened Waverly Jong to pursue success in life.

Lindo Jong is a mother to three children; Waverly, Tin, Winston and Vincent Jong
a divorcee, and a wife to a second husband. She grew up in China, and even though
her children are American, she wants them to have some Chinese character also.
Lindo's character encompasses three major traits including cleverness, being
controlling, and loving. When Lindo turned the age of two, she was engaged to marry
Tyan-yu who was one year old at the time. When her family's house was destroyed by a
flood, Lindo left her mother to live with Tyan-yu and his family while her's lived with other
relatives.

By tricking her husbands mother into thinking that the local matchmaker made a
mistake in marrying her and her husband. Lingo manages to leave the marriage without
loosing her honor and moves to America. She end up marrying a Chinese-American
man name Tin-Jong. Now her daughter Waverly Jong have a compete between Woo
family to a mother rivalry to see whos child is better.

Lindo Jongs character have many possible trait like being loving, caring and
clever. She is also a brilliant, practical and generous mother. As a devoted mother to her
children, she wants her children to have the best of both old and new world. She
encourage her daughter Waverly to become better in chess an best she can be, when
her child become a chess prodigy. She also have high expectations to her daughter.
She longs for her approval and blessing when Waverly Jong decided to marry Rich
Schields. Lindo Jong is a wise and determine women and a sacrificing mother to her
children.

Ying- ying St. Clair

A tiger represent Ying-ying because of her bravery and strong willed person on
how to deal with every single consequence happened in her life.

Ying- ying of St.Clair raise dto be passive and polite by her family member in
china. She grew up a fearless, great wealth and reckless girl. She marries a man
named Lin Xiao a wicked man treat her badly. She has a n abortion act, allowed Lin to
take advantage of her making. Ying-ying think that she was fated to suffer through their
unhappy union.

The Ying-ying moves to Shanghai and works on clothing store, marrying again an
American man named Cliffors St. Clair who has daughter. Her passive traits come into
play in her latest marriage and they are passed on her daughter. Her daughter Lena
gets caught in the abusive marriage just like she experience which leads her to spill all
about life in China. She begs for her own happiness and reconsidering life with her
husband.

Ying character traits pertains to her future she can predict the destiny and life.
She always depends on what nature can lead to her. She just takes this knowledge
passively and had an idea what consequences might next. Here, Ying-ying determines
to gather the threads of her past and use them as tools to cut her spirit loose. When she
has once again regained strong spirit her spirit, she can penetrate her daughter's hide
and cut her spirit loose. Ying-ying is aware that there will be a struggle, but she is
confident that she can win. Freeing her daughter's strength will be her legacy.

Lena St. Clair

The rain drops refer to sadness, life-giving, misery and welled up giving
emotions like Lenas situation with her husband Harold. .

In her youth, Lena was directed, controlled and overprotected by her mother
Ying-ying who advised her unpleasant stories of the outcomes of insubordination. Thus,
Lena formed into a tame and humble youth and a latent grow-up, who still submits to
the wishes of her mother Lena never expresses her conclusion or challenges a choice,

Lena fears her mother to visit the new house. She realizes that her mother will
transparently screw every little thing about it. Lena realizes that Ying-ying will see the
hopeless of her marriage to Harold her husband. She communicates a longing to
change of misery life. Harold is astounded to hear his wife feeling and can hardly
imagine how she could conceivably be troubled with him or their life together. Lenas
husband gives her no credit and simple appreciation in life. She is not that strong speak
about what is right.

Lena is lack of confident and showed herself that she is right in her decisions.
She doesnt know how to prove herself that she has a capability to speak up. Lena
emerges her shadow to her mother Ying-ying. Lenas portrait of fear in control. She
makes a move to attempt and express ideas and emotions to stand up to her beliefs.
She own a strength that her mother want to see what is inside personality of her
daughter. Including little steps to achieve and standing up herself in different situations
that she have.

Waverly Jong

A medal represent victory, hardship and bravery. Waverly Jong is a very

determined to embrace the quality of Chinese culture and prove herself that she
is great than any other else.

Waverly dependably battles with her Chinese legacy. She tries to make herself
act exceptionally American and look less oriental. She regularly appears humiliated by
her mother Lindo, and declines to embrace the qualities of lowliness and admiration
Lindo has attempted to show her. Worried about appearances, Waverly takes her mom
to see her beautician, so that Lindo's hair can be legitimately styled when she meets the
group of her life partner, Rich Shields. At the hair specialist, Waverly gets to be vexed
when says that she looks like Lindo, for she would like to show up Chinese.

She has a few insecurities in spite of the fact that she always contends with her
mother and discredits her conventional Chinese perspectives and qualities, Waverly
additionally looks for her approbation. She fears advising Lindo that she is going to
marry Rich, however she urgently needs her mothers gift. When her mom issues her
approbation, Waverly is enormously alleviated. Waverly extends the fact that she

Waverly Jong positive trait is brilliant, optimistic, and ambitious women. She is a
champion chess player that makes her very proud and arrogant women. She is a ver
successful person. She has one of the powerful character in the novel, he portrait
different role in the story. She start to admire Chinese culture that her mother is a part of
it. She is a very competitive person. She always want to win the game and resolve
difficulties in life.
