Remove corrosion by wire brushing, oil, grease and other foreign matter with solvent or
steam.
-
CONCRETE EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR (Poured, Plastered, Stucco, Hollow Blocks)
Remove all loose grit, mortar, dust, dirt, grease, oil and any other foreign matter. Allow
new plastered wall to cured for 14 to 28 days before neutralization. Treat new masonry with 1 :16
mixture of Boysen Neutralizer #44 and water respectively. Allow to dry overnight before sanding
or rinsing with water to remove white residue.
For chalking old latex paint, use Boysen Masonry Surface Conditioner #304. Treat any
mould or fungus infestation with Boysen Fungicidal Wash Solution #74 or Bleaching Solution
(1 :3).

GALVANIZED IRON
Clean thoroughly to remove dust, foreign matter, oil or grease using Boysen Paint Thinner
or Boysen Lacquer Thinner. For new galvanized iron, treat with 10% Boysen Metal Etching
Solution (1 part Boysen Metal Etching Solution to 9 parts of water). Then wipe off with rag soaked
in Boysen Paint Thinner. Immediately apply Boysen Metal Primers before rusts sets in.
METAL
Metal must be free from oil, grease, dust and st. The most ideal surface preparation for
rusty metal is sandblasting. Thin films of rust may be removed by wire brushing, sanding or
scraping. Thicker layers of rust can be removed with the use of Boysen Metal Etching Solution.
Metal surfaces cleared of rust must be immediately primed with Boysen Metal Primers. Do not
allow bright metal to be exposed to the weather as rust will set in fast.
WOOD
Use only kiln dried (12% moisture) wood. If wood is stained, seal using Boysen Lacquer
Sanding Sealer #1254. Sand rough wood until smooth. Countersink nailheads for putty
application. Dust off surfaces completely and wipe with clean rag.
B. Application
8 Use either brush, roller or spray unless otherwise specified.
Apply paints evenly, free from sags, runs, crawls and defects. Apply thin coats at
a time, leaving a minimum number of brush marks.
The number of coats specified is the minimum number acceptable. If full coverage
is not obtained with the specified coats, apply additional coats as necessary to
produce the required finish.
C. Painting Schedule
8 Always start at the top and work downwards.
0 Finish surfaces in accordance with manufacturer's recommendation.
Do not intermix paints of different types.
0 Be sure painting area is properly ventilated. For outdoors, paint only when the
weather allows it. Do not paint under direct sunlight, on rainy days or during a
very windy day.

* Surface Conditions and Preparation
The most important in any repainting job is the surface preparation. This is because most
of the problem in repainted jobs are caused by faulty surface conditions, inadequate preparation
and moisture entry. Preparing surfaces properly will give you a much better final result. The extra
time invested is worth it.
It i s not advisable to simply apply a fresh coat of paint over a surface that already has a
thick paint build-up. The adhesion between the new and old layers of paint coatings maybe
weakened as the new paint expands and controls with changes in temperature. The old paint
underneath will lose its elasticity and peel-off causing a paint failure. Better check if the existing
paint is in good condition, its adhesion is of utmost importance. Do a test coot on a small area to
establish suitability for recoating.
Beware of peeling or flaking in the existing paint film. Cut a small cross-section in the old
paint with a sharp blade. Apply masking tape over it and then remove, if the old paint comes off,
the old paint film needs to be stripped. Scraping, wire brushing and sanding will remove lose
paint in most areas. Applying a paint and varnish remover to facilitate scraping of old paint may
be useful. In some cases, sandblasting may be necessary.
Next, clean the surface thoroughly using the gentlest means possible yet achieving the
level of cleanliness required. Water, chemical and mechanical methods are available for this
purpose. Surface must be rid of dirt, dust, chalk, grease, wax polishes, alkali, soap films, etc.
After the surface preparation, complete the priming operation as soon as possible. Use a
suitable primer for a particular surface which is also compatible with the desired finish.
Remember, when painting never try to put too much paint on at once. Two coats at the
recommended coverage rate are better than one overly thick coat.
Table of Contents
PAINT PROBLEM DEFFECTS
ALLIGATORING
An incomplete form of peeling, where the paint cracks into large segments. The edges of
which break away from the surface while the center remains attached. Usually due to repeated
application of new coats over old coats no longer adherent.
BLEEDING
Discoloration of a coating caused by soluble color in the underlying surface. May be
prevented by applying an impermeable undercoating.
BLISTERING
Formation of blisters or pustules on a coating. May be due to underlying spots of grease,
sap or moisture, to excessive heat or direct exposure to the sun during the process of drying.
CHALKING
Progressive powdering from the surface inward. Always choose the right type of paint for
exterior purposes.
DEADENING
Loss of luster. May be due to insuificient or defective under coats, most frequently to
improper filling of wood.
MOISTURE BLUSH
Clouding of the lacquer film through precipitation of moisture in the film. Constant
temperature and constant low humidity in the finishing room will prevent much trouble.
PEELING
Indicates imperfect attachment to the surface. Common causes of peeling are due to
dampness, greasy surfaces and moisture.
PINHOLING
The term describes the appearance. Causes are changes in atmospheric conditions
during drying, application over sweating or incompletely dried undercoats, spots of grease or
soap and cold draught.
TACKINESS
The adhesive property of incompletely dried coating. Tackiness is caused especially in the
refinishing of old work, by applying a coating over a greasy or unclean surface.
WRINKLING
Condition appears chiefly to application of few heavy coats for more thin ones. Also may
be due to cold weather. Removal of the coats is the remedy.

ESTIMATING PAINT REQUIREMENTS
1. How to estimate quantity of paints, enamels and thinners especially on new large surface
areas:
A skilled painter can brush on two (2) 4 liter cans in a day's work (8 hours). This estimate
includes surface preparation and application of putty for minor surface imperfections. O n the
average a skilled painter will ask P 250.00 for solar/ (plus P 50 for ECOLA) for a day's work.

Boysen Multi-fleck Technicolor Paint
DESCRIPTION: Boysen Multi-fleck #2400 is a water-based technicolor paint that ingeniously
affords the decorator the styling element of pattern - a richness of surface previously achieved
only by the use of wallpaper.
Unlike wallpaper that has seam and jointing related problems, Boysen Multi-fleck mixes into the
decorating scheme more readily because of the subtlety of its patterns, creating the appearance
of "seamless wallpaper". It is more economical than wallpaper, easier to apply, and does not
peel or crack. It hides wall imperfections very well, and can easily be repaired without leaving a
trace because of its seamless properties.
With 20 basic colors that can be mixed and matched to form an infinite number of color
combinations, Boysen Multi-fleck allows the decorator complete freedom to create patterns to suit
every possible mood. It is also versatile in application, and can be applied on almost any
substrate and over any type of paint.
PRINCIPAL USES: Superior for interior concrete, wood and metal surfaces.
Apply by spray only. Ensure adequate ventilation during opplication and drying. Shake well and
stir gently before use. Do not thin.
Use an air compressor (minimum 'h horsepower) that can deliver optimum pot pressure of 40 to

as the following:
Use the cross lap method of spray application. Hold the gun at right angles to the surface about
-
1 'h 2 feet owoy - do not flex the wrist while spraying. Air pressure should be constant during
application to ensure continuity of pattern. After spraying, flush equipment with water then rinse
with lacquer thinner.

Boysen Plexibond #7760
DESCRIPTION: Boysen Plexibond is a specially formulated acrylic polymer designed for
compounding with Pozzolan o r Portland cement. The resulting mixture possesses
excellent adhesion, water resistance and flexibility even o n thin section applications. Its
use eliminates any cement plastering defects and water seepage, making it ideal for
waterproofing roof decks and firewalls. It makes for a durable and decorative
cementitious coating that not only enhances the appearance of light building materials
but also prolongs their service life as well with its excellent weatherability. It offers
excellent corrosion resistance when applied o n metal surfaces, and can also be used to
improve adhesion to mortar patching and tile grouts.
PRINCIPAL USES: Excellent adhesion to concrete, asbestos, bricks, wood and good corrosion
resistance on metal surfaces such as G.I. sheets.
Outstanding flexibility - A thin section of ordinary cement is hard and brittle and crumbles easily,
while cement modified with Plexibond possesses superior flexibility, thus eliminating cement
plastering defects. The excellent adhesive and tensile strength balance of Boysen Plexibond
maintains the integrity of the mortar.
Excellent Water Resistance -When mixed with cement, Boysen Plexibond forms a seamless, non-
porous impenetrable thick layer that disperses any liquid upon contad, preventing any water
seepage when applied on both vertical and horizontal surfaces.
-
Solvent-free Boysen Plexibond uses water for film cure, and thus has low odor, low flammability
or other hazards inherent for solvent based systems.
Retards Fire Spread - Boysen Plexibond is non-flammable, and retards flame spread when used
as a cementitious coating for light building materials such as plywood.
Excellent Corrosion Resistance -Boysen Plexibond offers good corrosion resistance on metal
surfaces such as G.I. sheets when applied at a minimum thickness of 20 mils.
Beautifies -Boysen Plexibond can be brushed on as a plaster finish or applied by textured roller
or mortar gun, giving on attractive "orange peel" textured cementitious coating. The thin
cementitious coating allows the preservation of architectural detail on wood, masonry, and metal
surfaces.
Table of Contents
DRY FILM THICKNESS Approximately 2 0 mils
OVERCOATING INTERVAL : Allow overnight before applying paint
THINNING Not necessary
PACKAGING 4-liter and 16-liter cans
SURFACE PREPARATION
BOYSEN PLEXIBOND should be applied on bare concrete, wood, or metal NOT PREVIOUSLY
PAINTED. Existing paint should be totally scraped off. Surface should be clean, free from oil,
grease, dirt, any loose grit or mortar. Wet masonry surfaces first with water before applying
PLEXIBOND mix to ovoid abrupt drying and cracking of the applied modified cement, especially
under hot and sunny conditions.
APPLICATION
Mix 6.5 to 8 kgs. of cement to 4 liters of Boysen Plexibond. Add cement to Plexibond slowly while
stirring to prevent lumping. Pass mixture through a fine strainer to sift out lumpy materials. Ensure
intimate mixing, stirring as often as possible to avoid settling. Keep mixture proportion constant
for a uniform texture. Mix only enough material to prevent waste. Workability of Plexibond
mixture is 3 0 minutes, while potlife is 2 hours.
For vertical surfaces such as firewalls, apply two to three coats of Plexibond mixture by textured
roller (for orange peel texture finish) or three to five coats by brush (for plain finish) while
maintaining coverage rate at 5-6 sq. meters per gallon. Recoating interval is 1-2 hours.
For horizontal surfaces such as roof decks, parapets, canopies and ledges, apply three to five
coats by brush or two to three coats by textured roller. Reinforce joints, corners and active cracks
susceptible to structural cracking or movement with a strip of fibergloss matting. Put on the
motting immediately after the second coat, while the mixture is still wet. The motting should
adhere to the mixture. Make sure the Plexibond coating and the matting is completely dry before
applying succeeding coats. The motting should be completely covered by the mixture. Let dry for
one day, then apply a bond coat by brushing Boysen Plexibond straight from the can prior to
laying out mortar topping.
For filling large cracks, add 3 parts by volume of fine uniform-sized sand to 1 part cement and
mix with Plexibond to trowellable consistency.
For maximum durability, topcoat application is recommended. Suggested topcoats are Boysen
Permacoat Latex, Boysen Acrytex, Boysen Poly-U 2K Point, Boysen Acqua Epoxy or Boysen Epoxy
Enamel. Allow Plexibond to dry at least one day before paint application.
