Causes for excessive speech
Know that there are many reasons for talking too much of which some are:
1. Arrogance, pride and self-conceit.
2. Disease of the heart which is born of weakness in faith.
3. Ostentation and effort to draw people's attention.
4. Superficial knowledge, and the belief that he has mastered many branches
of knowledge although he has only scratched their surface.
5. Considering others inferior and worthless and not giving any importance to
what they have.

Harm of Excessive Speech

As for the harm in talking excessively, there are too many and some of them are

1. It leads to lying and the biggest one of these is attributing a lie upon Allah

and His Messenger fi by declaring Allah's prohibited as permissible and

2. It leads to deceiving Muslims.

4. It leads to a loss in the ability to accept advice from others and a

tendency to insult the person advising.

5. It leads to arriving at wrong conclusions, which is a result of not paying

careful attention to what is being said and indeed brings destruction and

dangerous consequences for the individual and society.


6. It leads to hiding the truth and publicizing falsehood.

7. It leads to animosity between people.
8. It leads to fuelling the flames of discord, disputes and war. Indeed it has
been said: before wars come words.
We ask Allah to show us our faults and we praise and show gratitude to Allah
in all circumstances.

The Prophet fi said: When the son of Adam gets up in the morning, all the limbs humble
themselves before the tongue and say: 'Fear Allah for our sake because we are with you:
(i.e., we will be rewarded or punished as a result of what you do) if you are straight, we will
be straight; and if you are crooked, we will become crooked.' [Al- Tirmidhi, Graded Hasan by
Al-Albani]
And sometimes the talkative person thinks that his words will not result in any harm
although it could ruin him in ways that he does not even realize. The evidence of
this is in the words of the Prophet fi : A person utters a word thoughtlessly (i.e.,
without thinking about its being good or not) and, as a result of this, he will fall down into
the fire of Hell deeper than the distance between the east and the west." [Agreed Upon by
a Al-Bukhr & a Muslim]

If the talkative person reflected on his state of affairs, then for the salvation of his

soul, he would practice silence and refrain from arguing about matters that are not

his field of expertise. Verily, the Prophet fi has said: Whoever is silent, he is saved.

A talkative person indulges in all kinds of meaningful and meaningless talk.

Furthermore, his speech relies on hearsay, commonly circulated news and false

rumors. Indeed the Prophet fi has said: "Allah has hated for you three things: -1. Vain

talks, (useless talk) that you talk too much or about others. -2. Wasting of wealth -3. And

asking too many questions. [Agreed Upon by a Al-Bukhr & a Muslim]

So O my Muslim brother, if there are so many dangers inherent in talking, then it is


only sensible for you to beware of its consequences, and that you do not indulge in
meaningless conversation, and do not talk except in matters that concern you. Do
not speak except with truth, fairness and courtesy. And do not interfere in arguments
on matters outside your own area of expertise. And become a good listener because
you have two ears and one tongue.

Allah's Messengerfi said, "Whoever can guarantee (the chastity of) what is between his
two jaw-bones and what is between his two legs (i.e. his tongue and his private parts), I
guarantee Paradise for him." [a Al-Bukhr]

[In the above-mentioned hadith] 'Lahyay' [ ] is the dual of 'lahyin' [ ]and
it means 'the two jaw bones on the sides of the mouth'.
And [' ]what is between them' refers to 'the tongue'.
The Messenger of Allahfi said: "For whomever Allah protects against the evil of what is
between his jaws and the evil of what is between his legs, he shall enter Paradise." [Al-
Tirmidh].

head of the matter is Islam, its pillar is the prayer and its peak is jihad. Then he fi said,

Shall I not tell you of the foundation of all of that? I said, Yes, O Messenger of Allah fi.

So he took hold of his tongue and said, Restrain this. I said, O Prophet of Allah fi, will

we be taken to account for what we say with it? He fi said, May your mother be bereaved
of you, O Ma'adh! Is there anything that throws people into the Hellfire upon their faces
or: on their noses except the harvests of their tongues? [Amad & al-Tirmidh, who said it
was Hasan Sahih]

Of the dangers of the tongue is this: that all the body parts plead their helplessness
before the tongue and it is apparent that they are subservient to it, and follow its lead
in good and evil. For this reason they plead with it to be God-fearing and upright.

level of correct recitation [of the Qur'an], then how can he have attained any degree

Then he starts opinionating in the field of Arabic literature and critiques classical

(poets) as if he is one of the leading men of letters and critics of his times.

Then you will find him speaking about medicine and engineering, mathematic (or:
also sports), politics, astronomy, space sciences, water shortage in desert regions

and global climate change as if he is a leading expert of these disciplines. However,

the fact is that his share of knowledge in these fields is worthless, and he is in reality

motivated by a desire to talk and impress others. Moreover, he shows complete

disregard for the etiquettes of speech or any courtesy. Nor does he give anyone

other than himself the opportunity to express their opinions. But instead hastens to

prove other's opinions wrong and reject it before even giving them a proper hearing.

This establishes the disease of his heart as if he is out to avenge himself, and shows

that he is least interested in truth being established or to accept it from anyone else.

And an overly loquacious person [Tharthr] often causes unjustness to others and

lowers their status, when the Prophetfi has said:A (true) Muslim is one from whose

tongue and hand the Muslims are safe [Agreed Upon by a Bukhri & a Muslim]

This is why the Prophetfi has commanded us to guard the tongue and to use it only

for beneficial things, and for such purposes that attracts goodness towards the

Uqbah bin Aamir narrated: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allahfi! What is the means to

salvation?' He said: 'That you control your tongue, suffice yourself your house, and cry over
your sins.'" [Ab Dwd & al-Tirmidh, graded Sahih le Ghairihi by Al-Albani]
And the Prophetfi said: Good news is for him who controlled his tongue and his house
was sufficient for him and he wept over his sins. [Al-Tabarni, graded Hasan le Ghairihi by
Al-Albani]
And the Prophetfi informed us that whoever controlled his speech and guarded his tongue
will be successful in attaining his Lord's Paradise.

alphabet or punctuation mark, as Allah says:
And indeed, [appointed] over you are keepers; noble and recording. They know whatever
you do. [Al-'Infir: 10-12]
So O Muslim brother! Why do you ruin yourself with idle chatter and excessive
talk, and waste time in 'he said this and she said that' and 'this was said and that is
said'?
Is it not sufficient for you to focus on your own faults and strive to reform them?
Is it not sufficient for you to fulfill the obligations that Allah has placed upon you
and refrain from that which He has prohibited you from, and gain knowledge of

those things that have been made mandatory upon you to learn?

Is it not sufficient for you that you spend your time in the obedience of Allah, and fill

your life with the remembrance of Allah and the recitation of His Book?

'Al-Mutashaddiq' [ ] ' is 'one talks with his lips puffed and contorted

pretentiously, pompous and arrogant, trying to prove his superiority over others'.

'Al-Mutafaihiq' [ ] has the same meaning.

Despite the Prophet'sfi severe warning against idle prattle and boastful talk, pride
and arrogance, we see that many people do not refrain from excessive talk nor
talking about matters that they are unable to perform well. Of them, you will find
one who talks about religious matters as if he is Ibn Taymiyyah or Ibn ul Qayyim or
Ibn Hajr or Imam Nawawi. And makes references to such Quranic ayahs which he

All praise is for Allah as He deserves to be praised, and may the peace and blessings
of Allah be upon His Prophet and slave fi, and upon those who follow him, and upon
His party till the Day of Judgment. And after that
Indeed, excessive talking is a serious disease and a dangerous ailment that afflicts
many people. It has caused them to deviate from the straight path, and led them to
wander aimlessly in a wasteland of heedlessness, false ideas and foolish thoughts.

for Allah will ask you about all of that.


Ibn Kathir says: In conclusion, what they said means that Allah forbids speaking
without knowledge and only on the basis of suspicion, which is mere imagination
and opinion. [Tafsir Ibn Kathir]
And Allah says: Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared
[to record]. [Qf (The Letter "Qaf"): 18]
