4. Description
What is the CO2? CO2 is a liquefied, colourless, inert, clean, non-corrosive and no electricity
conductor gas. Its density is 1.5 times higher than the air. Used to extinguish flammable liquids,
gases and in some cases for solid combustible fires.
The CO2 effective concentration in fire extinguishing causes asphyxia on people and it is only
used in areas which are usually unoccupied. It extinguishes through the reduction of oxygen in
the air below the combustion limits (15%) and it also cools and absorbs the flame heat.
CO2 Physical Specification:
Chemical name: Carbon dioxide
Chemical formula: CO2
Molecular Weight: 44,01
Liquid density at a 20C: 777Kg/m3
Critical temperature: 31C
Critical pressure: 78.82 bar
Vapour pressure at 20C: 57.2 bar
Maximum filling density: 0.67 Kg/L
Air relative density: 1.5
Ozone destructive power: 0
Greenhouse effect potential: 1
The system shall be used for the fire protection of mechanical and electrical equipment where
water is not permissible to quench internal fires. It can extinguish fires by restricting the
atmospheric oxygen supply necessary for combustion. Carbon dioxide may be stored in high
pressure batteries (at T=21C, P=51 bar) or in low pressure containers. (At T=18C, P=21 bar)
When volume of CO2 is high, it is preferred to use low pressure containers. However when the
requirement of CO2 is small as in our case it is conventional practice to use high-pressure
system.
There are 2 types of fixed automatic CO2 systems:
Total flooding system
Local application system
In this project we use total flooding CO2 system for electrical and cable gallery building. Total
flooding system shall consist of a fixed supply of carbon dioxide permanently connected to fixed
piping, with fixed nozzles arranged to discharge carbon dioxide into an enclosed space or
enclosure about the hazard.
The system includes the following items:

5. Operation
In this system CO2 Gas stored in the high pressure cylinder and release in case of fire. The
amount of the main supply of carbon dioxide in the system shall be at least sufficient for the
largest single hazard protected or group of hazards that are to be protected simultaneously.
CO2 requirements and classification of protected area has been fixed according to NFPA 12. So
as per CO2 P&ID drawings, two group of main & reserve CO2 cylinders have been considered.
When main CO2 cylinders are out of service, transition of CO2 system from main to reserve
position should be done by transfer switch manually. The transfer switch located in the cylinder
room.
Above mentioned system is connected to an automatic conventional control panel. The design
includes safety features, which reduce the chances of an accidental discharge.
The display panel has a status indicator, a manual extinguishing release unit, an
automatic/manual key switch and LED's complete.
The fixed carbon dioxide system is operated automatically by means of detectors connected in
cross zoning principle to protect operators from CO2 inhalation.
(Note: There are two zones in cross zoning)

Co. L.T.D CO2 Fire Extinguishing System
When one of the detectors from zone1 senses, the related sounder will be activated, and also
when a detector from zone2 senses, its beacon will be activated.
If both of above event occurred, a signal will be sent from panel to hazard alarm bell for 30 or
60 seconds (depends on panel programming) to warn people to evacuate the hazard.
After 30 seconds for releasing of CO2 an electrical signal will be sent to the solenoid valves of
N2 pilot cylinders from panel. The N2 pilot cylinders run CO2 cylinders via a pilot hose that
connected to N2 Pilot cylinders. After that for opening relative directional valve and co2
cylinders of the area which is in fire, N2 gas will be flowed through pilot tubes from master
cylinders. At the same time, one check back signal will be sent by related pressure switches
which are installed on CO2 pipes to ECP and a signal will be sent to fire zone warning light to
warn accesses to CO2 extinguished hazard.
Also extinguishing could be done by pushing a release push button located in the exit of every
hazard.

Co. L.T.D CO2 Fire Extinguishing System
A manual/Automatic switch located at entrance of every hazard provide a chance to turn the
whole system off for avoiding any risk of none necessary co2 agent release.
Note: In the event of fire, a signal from the Co2 panel sends command to the HVAC panel to
stop fans & Re-Opened fire dampers.
5.1 Construction
The fire extinguishing system shall be supplied in the form of a skid constructed from carbon
steel.
Each skid mounted CO2 cylinder battery shall consist of all necessary distribution manifold(s)
valves, distribution/selector valve, check valves, Lock Out Valve, flexible loops, pilot lines, pilot
check valves, auto bleed valves, mechanical weighting devise, pilot cylinder, Solenoid Actuated
Valve on pilot Cylinder, pressure switches on pilot cylinder, cylinder rack brackets and bolts,
skid frame, discharge nozzles, lamp units and instruction labels.
The design shall incorporate method of flexible coupling between the cylinders and manifold(s)
to allow for cylinders to be removed from any part of the battery without accidental or false
discharge for testing or charging purpose, in addition, the unaffected sections of the battery
shall not be prevented from operating normally during the period when discharged cylinders
are removed.
The CO2 system manufacturer shall define the routes and sizes for the distribution pipe work
from the point of entry to and within the enclosure spaces to be protected, together with the
quantity, type, size and location of all necessary discharge nozzles.

Calculation notes as per NFPA 12 shall be provided for review. These calculation notes shall
demonstrate that the quantities of CO2 are adequate and shall enumerate the assumptions
used such as enclosure volume, enclosure leak rates, flooding factor, discharge rate, pressure
losses at lowest.
Weight of co2 cylinders is controlled by weighting devices. The weight indicator mechanism is a
device used to mechanically monitor the content of a fixed fire co2 cylinder. When the content
of the cylinder fall by a pre-determined amount, typically 10%, the weight drops causing a
micro switch photoelectric device to trip and send a signal to ECP.
When two or more areas are to be protected using a central blank of co2 cylinders, a pressure
operated directional valve is installed in each of the co2 main feed pipe leading to the
designated areas, in normally condition (no fire) all of the valves are closed upon co2 gas
released from relative master cylinder it will be opened by co2 pressure and allow to co2 be
released to area which is in fire.
To prevent any undesirable co2 gas release to hazards where they are occupied by men, a high
pressure ball valve will be providing after any directional valve. This device will allow
maintenance team to lock the system and prevent any extinguishing release through system
faults, failures, etc.
After discharging of main cylinders they should be send to refill, meanwhile the reserve
cylinders would be stand by in extinguishing process. For doing that a main and reserve transfer
switch located in fire junction box should be set in a reserve position so all extinguishing signals
would be send to reserve cylinders.
