Development concept
The goal in developing the CBR250RR was to make it the No.1 super sport motorcycle in the 250cc
class, by achieving the most advanced riding quality in the class and ensuring the fun of motorcycle
maneuvering by using the throttle-by-wire system, a first in this class,* among other means. However,
the main focus of development was not on merely achieving numerical targets and specification values,
or achieving the targets for individual functions, as goals. Rather, our development policy focused on
more qualitative characteristics and on satisfying the feeling of being attracted to a super sport model,
a feeling likely shared by many riders, in order to realize the new-generation RR.

Styling (1)
Hondas motorcycle styling philosophy that is common to any types from super sport to commuter
models is to give expression to each products functional beauty according to its purpose. Necessary
for determining the styling design is an in-depth understanding of each of the functions of individual
parts, with the styling substantially contributing to the easy maneuverability of a super sport motorcycle.
A model with RR included in its name requires the greatest evolution for its fun of maneuvering,
and the development team aimed to move a step beyond this, giving expression to functional beauty
to create a form that communicates excitement of the riding experience even before you ride the model.
The design theme established in pursuit of this new-generation styling was Speed Shape, based
on which the CBR150R was introduced in February 2016 in Indonesia.
At the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show a little before this, Honda exhibited a prototype for the CBR250RR
as a Lightweight Super Sport Concept model, toward which there were great expectations from
consumers in Japan also.
The styling concept of the CBR250RR is as follows.
To achieve this goal, all the members of the development team were involved with the design
processes for functions from an earlier stage than usual of examining the body framework at deeper
levels, even beyond the area of technical expertise of each member. This helped elevate the overall
level to the new-generation styling with a unique presence distinctive from conventional designs,
successfully achieving beauty even for the framework as well as the external appearance.

Overall silhouette
To give expression to the models powerful, speedy and exciting runs, a daring, wedge-shaped
design leading from the low, long nose to the rising tail was chosen.
At the same time, concentrating the mass of the vehicle body toward the front (front-massive form)
makes the whole vehicle look like a fierce animal taut with energy and power, taking aim at its prey.
Side view
Considerably narrowing the width of the area that links the rear end portion of the tank with the seat
has secured excellent ground reach, as well as contributing to improved handling of the body. Making
knee grip easier, the clear, attractive shape of the tank also ensures that the riders arms are optimally
positioned in the crouching riding posture.

Coloring (1)
Coloring concept
To further bring out the unique characteristics and charm of the CBR250RR, 2 types and 3 variations
have been made available for the coloring.
The graphics designed exclusively for the model are applied for all 3 color variations, which is a
distinctive feature worthy of the flagship model in Hondas super sport category produced in Indonesia.
Aiming to get closer to the images embraced by individual customers for the CBR250RR, the color
options are provided with the purpose of satisfying quite a wide variety of customer preferences.
Standard colors
<STD-1 ANCHOR GRAYMETALLIC>
The base color of metallic dark gray that projects images of both wildness and sophistication at the
same time is augmented by splashes of yellow with high color saturation on the edge faces that look
like cut ends, a characteristic of the model styling, and in convoluted portions of the cowl. This high-
contrast color combination emphasizes the unique presence of the CBR250RR, as seen from any
angle, resulting in a coloring that highlights the vehicles silhouette.

Riding position
The riding position is designed to impress onlookers as well with the unique presence of how a
person actually rides the CRB250RR. While intending to highlight the speediness of the CRB250RR
worthy of a super sport bike, with the rider being one with the motorcycle in riding it, our topmost
priority in developing the model was to ensure the ease of actively maneuvering the vehicle, with the
design incorporating the following characteristics.
Narrowing the area leading from the rear end of the tank to the tip of the seat has allowed for
easy knee grip and good ground reach.
For handlebars, a separate type mounted below the top bridge is used.
A very direct operation feeling has been incorporated into the lightweight rearset .
The sporty riding position realized through these measures lets the rider focus intently on riding
itself, and together with the nimble maneuverability, takes the rider to a realm of fun riding attainable
perhaps only with an RR model.

Brakes
For the front brakes, a single floating disc of 310 mm diameter the largest in the class is used,
while a single disc with a diameter of 240 mm is used for the rear brakes, raising the braking
performance. Use of the newly developed wave type discs for both the front and rear brakes helps
achieve the light, airy external appearance worthy of a 250cc super sport motorcycle. A new brake
lever and brake pedal have also been developed, focusing on maneuverability that matches the ride
very well.
In addition, a model type equipped with the ABS* is available, offering an enhanced sense of security
in dealing with more wide-ranging road surface conditions.
* ABS is a system to assist in the riders braking operations. Just as for vehicles not equipped with ABS, sufficient deceleration is
required before entering any corner, and unreasonable turning marked by an inappropriate speed, etc., cannot be overcome. Upon
the ABS system activation, the rider is informed of it by feeling a certain kickback (rocking-back).

Wheels
The new aluminum wheels exclusively designed for the model are manufactured through the GDC
(gravity die casting) method. The linear design with 7 spokes further enhances the models impression
of Speed Shape, and while a left-right symmetric design is adopted for the spokes, the cross-
sectional shape with the rear side opened up further contributes to weight reduction. These design
factors ensure appropriate rigidity balance ideal for sporty riding and reduce the unsprung weight.

For the power unit, the throttle-by-wire system (explanations provided later) has been adopted for
bringing out superior power in the entire speed range in a more linear manner, toward the goal of
clearly offering the exciting feel of riding a super sport model.
The development concept for the power unit of the CBR250RR was as follows.

Water pump
For cooling the combustion chamber in line with the increased power output, the water pump has
been placed in the cylinder head, as on the RC213V. With the width narrowed and the water pipe
shortened to create a more compact unit, adopting a camshaft driven mechanism for the water pump
contributes to reductions in weight and friction. Also, to ensure quick warm-up, a bottom bypass
passage has been created.
Water pump
Thanks to these measures, a compact 2-cylinder unit has been created, with its width almost
equivalent to that of a conventional single-cylinder engine installed on sporty models in the same class.
Adopting a layout for downdraft intake (explanations provided later) has made it necessary to secure
a certain capacity for the air cleaner unit. For this reason, the position of the engine breather chamber
for separating oil from air, which is usually placed on the head cover, has been switched to the location
behind the cylinder, which achieved a reduction in engine height for a more compact unit.
These measures for creating a more compact unit resulted in reducing the frontal projected area for
the engine of the CRB250RR, helping realize the dynamic Speed Shape styling, while concentration
of the engine mass has contributed to improving vehicle maneuverability.

Applying these technologies to achieve higher engine speed and output has resulted in the No.1
maximum output in the class*.
Setting the valve timing by paying close attention to low- and mid-speed ranges has achieved both
powerfulness in those ranges and high output in the high-speed range. The connecting pipe structure
for the muffler has also ensured smooth transition between the output on the high-rotation side and
output on the low-rotation side, achieving a stress-free power feel.

Improved comfort
Uniaxial primary balancer
A uniaxial primary balancer is used for cancelling the primary vibrations generated from
reciprocating parts of the piston and connecting rod. Also, the use of metal plain bearings reduced
unpleasant vibrations and noise.
Exhaust sounds
To ensure that the rider of a CBR250RR can fully enjoy the experience of fun riding, close attention
was also paid to the sounds. The dual tailpipe specifications are adopted for the silencer
compartmentalized into 3 chambers, with exhaust pipes leading from each of the second and third
chambers. This has resulted in striking an excellent balance between the individual exhaust sounds
with different sound characteristics, for a dramatic exhaust sound tuning featuring transitions from the
powerful sound in the low-speed range to the sounds evocative of the roars of racing machines in the
mid-to-high speed range.

Development concept for the control and electrical systems of the CBR250RR:
Control system
Throttle-by-wire system
The CBR250RR is the first model in the class* to incorporate the throttle-by-wire system (hereinafter
referred to as TBW). By enabling more precise throttle valve control through throttle grip operations,
a more refined and stable acceleration feel is now possible.
The riders throttle grip operation for transmitting their intentions to the engine is detected bythe
accelerator position sensor unit (APS) set at the left end of the throttle grip. The engine control unit
(ECU) then judges the output characteristics according to the riding mode selected (explanations
provided later), and instructs the valve opening angle for the throttle body to the TBW motor.

Control system
Riding mode
With the adoption of the TBW, it is now possible to set the following three types of riding modes for
further enjoying the ride in wide-ranging situations.
Sport+ :Standard mode that lets the rider enjoy linear acceleration in an all-round manner
Sport + :Mode emphasizing powerful torque that lets the rider enjoy smoother acceleration
Comfort:Mode focusing on comfort for more relaxed and tandem riding
The Mode switch set on the left handlebar is used for shifting to a different riding mode. Even while
running, shifting the mode is possible when the throttle grip is totally closed. The selected riding mode
is displayed on the right-hand side of the liquid crystal display panel of the meter.
As well as improving throttle linearity according to the riders intentions, the TBW has resulted in
weight reduction by doing away with conventional throttle cables and in increasing the degree of
freedom for styling design around the cockpit and the layout of individual parts, thus substantially
contributing to realization of the Speed Shape concept.

Lights
Front light unit
For the front light unit, the first LED combination light unit installed on a motorcycle model*
incorporating both the position lamp and the turn signal light is used. LEDs are used also for the dual
headlight, whose design expresses the identity of CBR series models, and the now thinner and more
compact unit gives a very active impression, thus inheriting and further evolving the tradition.
The position lamps that are the always-on white lights located above the headlights could start
flashing in amber color when the turn signal is activated, comprising a function-switching unit. This
is a cutting-edge luminescence style unprecedented on a motorcycle model. Configuring this LED
combination light unit independent of the headlight and incorporating it into the sharply designed front
cowl, by capitalizing on the compactness of LED lights, has enabled doing away with conventional,
separate front turn signals, helping shape the models unique front face.

Rear light unit
Line emission is used for the always-on tail lamp with a light guide structure, while for the stop lamp
that comes on when braking, the reflector structure achieves the luminescent expression with sparkles.
These lamps are independently placed in a vertical configuration, so that when braking, the stop lamp
comes on separately from the tail lamp.
Each rear turn signal forms a separate unit so as not to increase the rear cowl width, with LEDs now
used for all the lamps including the license lamp. The compact lamp body distinctive of LED lighting
has enabled the design of the lamps integrated into the sharply rising rear cowl.
