Communicating Hydrocephalus Pathophysiology

Predisposing Factors:
Genetics
Age

Precipitating Factors:
Tumor in the Choroid
Plexus
Overproduction of CSF in choroid plexus

Choroid plexus produces CSF with same volume and

rate.

CSF circulates around right and left lateral ventricle then

to 3rd ventricle the foramen of monro,

CSF Flows to Aqueduct of sylvius

4th ventricle

Impaired absorption of CSF fluid

Disruption of the normal CSF flow

Accumulation of

CSF

Increase in CSF pressure and volume

Dilation

Underlying white matter atrophies

Compression of the brain

tissue and cerebral blood vessels

Sunset eyes

Ischemia - inadequate blood supply

If treated :
Learning Disabilities
Memory Deficits
Psychological Deficits
Motor Skill Disabilities
Vision Problems
Hearing Disabilities
Seizures

If not treated :
Decompensatory mechanism may
continue to occur:
A. Decreased cerebral perfusion
B. Decrease PO2 leading to Hypoxia
C. Brain Damage

Death
