Evaluation:
Written assignments (totalling 50% of the final grade) are to be done
independently, in pencil. Evidence of collaboration will result in a grade of 0%.
Papers received after the beginning of class will be docked 5% (e.g., 92% to 87%). Any
paper received after the due date will be docked 10% (e.g., 92% to 82%). Later papers
will be accepted, but once an assignment has been discussed and returned to the class,
late papers will receive a grade of 0%. The lowest homework grade will not be
computed.
Four written module examinations will each be worth 10% of the final grade.
The professor reserves the right to administer quizzes, as needed, which will each have
the weight of one homework assignment. No make-up quizzes will be given under any
circumstances. Unless arranged for in advance, make-up exams will be given only in
cases of illness or emergency; in such a case, the professor is to be notified on or before
the day of the exam (an e-mail or a voice-mail message indicating student's phone
number must be left no later than the date of the exam). Approved make-up exams will
be scheduled at the earliest possible time, typically at 7:30 A.M. before the following
class.
Class participation will be worth 10% of the final grade. Much of this grade will
be based on punctuality and attendance. Each student is permitted three absences
without penalty. Three additional absences beyond those three, regardless of excuse,
will result in a zero for the participation portion of the grade. Any absences beyond
those six may result in a failing grade for the course.

The final letter grade will be based on the following scale:

A+ = 98-100%
A = 93-97%
A- = 90-92%
B+ = 87-89%
B = 83-86%
B- = 80-82%
C+ = 77-79%
C = 73-76%
C- = 70-72%
D+ = 67-69%
D = 63-66%
D- = 60-62%
E = <60%
Extra credit assignment: No later than 5 P.M., Friday, 9 Sept., send Prof. Everett
an e-mail with the subject I HAVE READ THE SYLLABUS.
