Background of El Filibusterismo
El Filibusterismo was known as The Reign of Greed. It was a sequel of his first book Noli Me Tangere.
Rizal wrote El Filibusterismo in dedication to the three martyred priests Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto
Zamora, expressing conviction that their treatment and deaths at the hands of the Spanish authorities was unjust.
He urged the society to open its eyes to reality and rebel against the Spanish government for its oppression and
abuse.
It consists of 38 chapters.
He started writing El Filibusterismo October 1887 while he was in Calamaba and he continued it in London in
1888.
He completed writing the novel on March 29, 1891 while he was in Biarritz, and it took 3 years to complete the
novel.
September 18, 1891 the novel was published in Ghent, partially funded by Rizals friend Valentin Ventura.Rizal
gratefully donated the manuscript and an autograph printed to Valentine Ventura.
Original manuscript of El Filibusterismo in Rizals own handwriting is now preserved in the Filipiniana Division of
Bureau of Public Libraries in Manila.
