Awake, arise, and stop not till you achieve your goal.

INTRODUCTION
In a recent study, 75% of the Indian managerial leaders were found to be Skill-strong
but value-weak. Yet 100% of the Indian managers dream of Skill-strong value-strong
life. What we need today is the western efficiency, dynamism and striving for excellence
combined with Indias holistic attitude of dedication for the welfare of many; for the
good of many. From this combination will emerge the future leaders of India.
This is an excerpt from Vivekanandas letter to Shri Haridas Beharidas Desai, the
Deewan of Junahgarh, he wrote in 1894. He definitely foresaw that a combination of
western efficiency and dynamism with Indian spiritual values will create impeccable
Indian managers when he said The fact of our isolation of all the other nations of the
world is the cause of our degeneration and its only remedy is getting back into the

current of the rest of the world. Motion is a sign of life

I have come to the conclusion that with all their faults the Hindus are
head and shoulders above all other nations in morality and spirituality and with
proper care and attempt and struggle of all her disinterested sons by combining
some of the active elements of the west with calm virtues of the Hindus they will
come a type of men far superior to any that have ever been in the world.
Today, after a hundred years, Vivekanandas vision is proving true. The future
generation is poised to see the rise of new heroes of management and administration, a
combination of western efficiency and dynamism with the holistic approach of service to
the divine beings in order to manifest the inherent divinity and ultimate glory and joy of
life.
This paper is our attempt to look into the Ethos which are the pillars of Indian survival,
despite the numerous onslaughts it has faced throughout history. And the management
about which we are concerned with is not only Business management but
Holistic management.
INDIAN ETHOS
In this section, we would look at the basic Indian principles of Management and will
relate to it from a management point of view later in the paper.

1.

Macrocosm in Microcosm
The first truth is the presence of an infinite knowledge, power, purity and bliss,
lurking behind the tiny body-mind complex of the limited human being, which
they called ATMAN. This truth was expressed in the Upanishads as Aham
Brahmasmi (I am Brahma) or Ayam Atman Brahma (The individual soul is
Brahma) or Tat Twam Asi (Thou are that). Svetasvatara Upanishad declares
that human beings are not born sinners, but children of immortality, and glorifies
the realization of this divinity of life as the only way to tide over the existential
suffering or even death.
Swami Vivekananda said in 1895 in the West: Though an atom is
invisible, unthinkable , yet in it are the whole power and potency of the
Universe. That is exactly what Vedanta says of Atman.

2.

A Holistic Universe
The second truth that the Indians discovered is the essential unity of existence.
It is a holistic Universe where at a deeper level of an all-pervading consciousness
everything in the world is interconnected. Krishna says in Shrimad Bhagwat
Gita - MAYI SARVAM IDAM PROTAM SUTRE MANIGANA IVA. (I
have interpenetrated the Universe like pearls in a thread).

Mundaka Upanishad says: Know that one Atman which has interpenetrated
the earth, the heavens, the internal mental Universe including all minds and all
energies. Give up all other vain talks, for that (Atman) is the way of
immortality.
3.

Self Control
Vasyendriyam Jitamatyam Dhritandam Vikarisu,
Parikshyakarinam Dhiram Atyaartham Shri Na Sevate
(Unless a person is self-controlled, the goddess of wealth will never serve

4.

him)

Spirituality
The purity of soul has been given utmost importance in Indian Vedas. For this
Vivekanada said:
Brahmacharya Pratishthaayaam Veerlaabhah
(From the establishment of chastitiy, energy is gained)
But this chastity is not only sexual chastity, he meant Mental, physical and

spiritual chastity, purity. For, when our mind, body and soul are pure, not a single
evil thought can creep in and we will conquer the bad in us.
Practicality of Indian Ethos
Many of us would be tempted to think of the above principles as superficial and
impractical but they are highly pragmatic in everyday, yes, everyday life. Let us take
an example from the field of management to further illustrate our point. If a person is
asked, Which salt do you buy, his answer would predictably be TATA. Why ?
Well, I have been buying TATA salt for years and it has never let me down
Exactly!!!! What doing Business in an ethical way does is that it creates a Brand
Reliability in the psyche of the customer which, ultimately, is the only thing that
counts. As simple as that! Tata never cheated me, so why should I stop buying it?
Brand XYZ product lack consistency in purity, so I better keep it away from me
Profit vs Ethics ?? or Profit and Ethics ??
Most of us have the misconception that profit and ethics dont go hand in hand.
You can either be ethical or you can make profits but not both simultaneously. But I
am afraid, those many of our gravely mistaken for it is the ethical who survives in the
long run. An unethical businessman may make profit for a short while but when his

true nature is unveiled (which surely will be) he will be out of the race.
In the Mahabharata Vyasa says to Humanity:
Urdhabahu Virami Esam Na Tu Kaschit Srinoti Me,
Dharmat Arthascha Kamaschu Sa Kimartham Na Sevyate
With arms raised, I am declaring Dharma or righteous action for the good of others,
come legitimate fulfillment of desires, and liberation from the painful bondages of
life, but no one is listening to me
Vivekananda says Unselfishness is more paying. Only people do not have the
patience to practice it Unselfishness is more paying from the point of view of health
also
CONCLUSION
We find ourselves capable of concluding this paper in n number of ways but still..
we believe that the following excerpt from Vivekanandas lecture at Cochin is the
kernel of the paper, the pivotal concept

India will be raised,

not with the power of flesh, but with the power of spirit,
not with the flag of destruction, but with the flag of peace and love,
not with the power of wealth but with the power of the begging-bowl,
the garb of the Sanyaasin.
The ancient mother has awakened once more, sitting on her throne rejuvenated.
Up, India, and conquer the world by your spirituality.
