5. Activities, Read-Alouds, Special Situations


Within my 414 clinical I will utilize read-alouds, that work well
during the early weeks of school, to help students focus and
become engaged in what they learn in the LA classroom.
First Day of School
Goals & Overview for All Grades
Briefly, what does the 1st Day of School Look Like for:
o Kindergarten, First & Second Grade
o Third & Fourth Grade
o Fifth & Sixth Grade
(Overview) Preparing for day 1 includes:

1. setting up the classroom


~circle area, furniture arranged to welcome collaborative and
individual work, classroom walls are not overwhelming,
supplies are clearly marked and away until they are used
2. getting to know your students
~check in with last years teacher, review records, talk to
other school personnel, review developmental characteristics
of the age you teach

Week One
What are the Week 1 Goals?

Goals for Week One:


1. Experience a collaborative and inclusive learning environment
~students can do inspiring work successfully
2. Make personal connections
~working with the class to learn and practice names
3. Practice essential academic routines
~Ex. Silent reading, sustained writing
~Daily routines (transitions, lunch, bathroom, etc.)
4. Explore some key academic supplies
~Ex. Books, math manipulatives, writing supplies

teacher to help students to experience a collaborative and inclusive


learning environment. I will also help my students to make personal
connections with one another by playing a name game. Lastly I will
work with them to create a set of classroom rules for Language Arts.

Week Two
What are the Week 2 Goals?
Identify 2 application ideas for your RED 414 Clinical.

Goals for Week 2:


1.Continue to build connections with students and to help them
build connections
2. Have opportunities to practice and polish routines introduced
in week 1.
3. Experience more academic choices on assignments or
projects
4.Gain more confidence in speaking and strengthen listening
skills
5. Work together to finalize classroom rules
I will help students to build connections further by in cooperating a
new name game into the morning meeting in my 414 clinical. I will
also utilize positive teacher language to create a positive
environment in the classroom and to make students more confident
and more welcomed.

Week Three
What are the Week 3 Goals?
Identify 2 application ideas for your RED 414 Clinical.

Week 3 Goals:
1. Continue to build stamina in all content areas (take steps
toward independence)
2. Continue to practice routines
3. Experience the rules coming to life
~K-2 will just start to create their rules
4. Learn about logical consequences and start to take
responsibility for mistakes
At this point in my 414 clinical, with the help of my teacher, I will
work with the students to journal and read for a longer period of time,
than the week before (this is increasing their stamina). My students
will be working on an independent reading project for the book
Cages, which we will be reading as a class (this is working on
building the complexity of the assignments and work given).

Weeks Four to Six


What are the Week 4 Goals?
Identify 2 application ideas for your RED 414 Clinical.

Week 4 Goals:
1. Students become an active member of the learning
community.
2. Students become fully engaged academically.
3. Students become more self-sufficient.
The students in my 414 clinical will be working on a whole class
project around the fourth week. The students will be doing a
community service project, raising money for the Humane Society in
Austin, to go with the book Cages. During this time in my 414
clinical I will try content-specific energizers with my students to keep
them engaged and to help them refocus.

Appendix A: Academic choice, closing circle, energizers, guided


discovery, interactive learning structures and modeling, morning
meeting, quiet time, teacher language.
To help promote student learning I will utilize open-ended
questions. By using these questions my students will have to dig
deeper and think harder to find an answer. I would use this in a
whole group setting, to have a whole class discussion. This will
give each student an opportunity to share their thoughts and
ideas and feel heard.
Appendix B: Activities and Songs/Chants
At the beginning of class, I will create a positive and inclusive
classroom by incorporating something like a morning meeting. I
would try skip counting and who remembers first. The morning
meeting at the beginning of language arts class would help
students focus and become engaged in what is to be learned
that day.
Appendix C: Sources of Read Aloud Books
I will use these websites to find books that relate to various
subjects being covered in the classroom, at that given point and
time. This will help students make connections from text to text.
Read-Alouds also help to get students engaged.
Appendix D: Guest (Substitute Teacher), New Student, Indoor
Recess, Field Trips
In my 414 clinical I will ask my cooperating teacher what she
does or has prepared for when she has a substitute teacher in
the classroom. I will compare what she has/does to what the
book recommends. If I were to have my own classroom I would
have a substitute binder with all the necessary materials. It

would include lessons, a schedule, a list of the most common


classroom routines, a list of the classroom rules, a teacher to
contact if they need help or have any questions and various
activities listed for spare time.
