What is titration ?
Titration is a common laboratory method of quantitative chemical analysis that can be
used determine the concentration of a solution by reacting a number of volume of the solution
whose concentration has been already known, which is known as titrant or standard solution.
Titration involving acid-base reaction is called acid-base titration. There are two kinds of
acid-base titrations, acidimetric (determine of base solution concentration by acid standard
solution) and alkalimetric (determination of acif solution concentration by base standard
solution).
Step 1 : Prepare
Equipment

: burette, stative and strap, erlenmeyer, pippete.

Material
: 70 mL of NaOH, 10 mL of CH3COOH, 10 mL H2SO4, 10 mL HCl, less
solution Phenolphatalein
Step 2 : Doing Experiment
Experiment 1
1.
2.
3.
4.

Prepare 10 mL NaOH, 10 mL CH3COOH and solution Phenolphtalein

Pour 10 mL of NaOH into burette
Pour 10 mL of CH3COOH into erlenmeyer and adding 2 drops of Phenophtalein
Open the burette slowly until the colour will be changed

Experiment 2

4.

Prepare 50 mL NaOH, 10 mL H2SO4, and solution Phenolphtalein

Pour 50 mL of NaOH into burette
Pour 10 mL of H2SO4 into erlenmeyer and adding 2 drops of Phenophtalein
Open the burette slowly until the colour will be changed

Experiment 3

4.

Prepare 10 mL NaOH, 10 mL HCl and solution Phenolphtalein

Pour 10 mL of NaOH into burette
Pour 10 mL of HCl into erlenmeyer and adding 2 drops of Phenophtalein
Open the burette slowly until the colour will be changed

Step 3 : Calculate by Using Data of Titration Results

V1 . Va . Ma = V2 . Vb . Mb

Note :
V1

: Volume of acid

V2

: Volume of base

Va

: Valence of acid

Vb

: Valence of base

Ma

: Consentration of acid

Mb

: Concentration of base

The Calculation
1. V1 . Val . Ma = V2 . Val . Mb
10 . 1 . Ma = 9 . 1 . 0.1
Ma = 0,9 / 10
Ma = 0,09
2. V1 . Val . Ma = V2 . Val . Mb
50 . 2 . Ma = 10 . 1 . 0,1
Ma = 1 / 100
Ma = 0,01
3. V1 . Val . Ma = V2 . Val . Mb
10 . 1 . Ma = 7,5 . 1 . 0,1
Ma = 0,75 / 10
Ma = 0,075

What is Buffer Solution

Buffer solution is the solution that can be used to maintain the pH value of the
solution. Buffer solution is called dapar solution.
Step 1 : Prepare
Equipment

: pH meter, erlenmeyer, pippete.

Material
: 10 mL of CH3COOH 0,1 M,10 mL of CH3COONa, less NaOH 0,1 M , less
HCl 0,1 M , Water pour.
Step 2 : Doing Experiment
1. Prepare the mixed solution of CH3COOH and CH3COONa
2. Calculated the pH of solution.
3. Pour the solution of NaOH into erlenmeyer and calculated the pH
4. Pour the solution of HCl into erlenmeyer and calculated the pH

5. Pour the water into erlenmeyer and calculated the pH

Step 3 : Drawing the rasio table

Step 4 : Conclusion
pH of buffer solution does not change, though it is added by a little water, a little acid
or a little base. It is different from other solution, such as pure water. Water will be more
basic if it is added by base, ans will be more acidic if it is added by acid. But the addition
solution of acid and base into non-buffer solution for example in this experiment is HCl
changes pH greatly.
