SITUATION ANALYSIS
Strengths: Unlike most non-profits located in Kokomo, Indiana, Nadege
has a mission to reach people in another country. With a unique mission,
the passion from the organization is through the roof. The founders of
Nadege, Inc. have all known each other for a relatively long time before
forming the organization. They felt that it was their calling to begin this
organization.
Another strength that Nadege, Inc., has is their ties to Oakbrook
Church. Most of the people on the board have an extensive history with
Oakbrook. This church has been put in situations to move their mission
to other locations across Indiana. The first church has been planted in
Flora, Indiana, and they plan to move across the state of Indiana until
their mission is fulfilled.
Weaknesses: There is only one person on the staff for Nadege, Inc., on
staff that actually lives in Haiti. Ideas can be generated to fix a problem
but steps to get those ideas take a long time to create in another
country. Also, Nadege has a lack of funding for their organization. After

being an organization for one year, the organization finally came up with
the resources to build their first aspect of their safe house.
With the strength of having a church that wants to move their
mission across the state of Indiana, there comes a weakness. The
towns of Kokomo and Flora are relatively small to be starting an
international non-profit. In small towns, there are not a lot of
opportunities for growth. If the organization fails in the beginning stages
of forming, there will be no opportunities for growth.
Opportunities: With Kokomo being so close to bigger cities, there is
opportunity for growth. Along with the mission of Oakbrook Church,
moving their church across the state of Indiana. If the organization can
maintain their relationship with Oakbrook and their mission is successful,
more funding can come from this. With the funding, there could be more
than one safe house in the long run.
With spreading the goal of Nadege, Inc., across the state of
Indiana could build a bigger donor base. Right now, the organization is
lacking funds and a strong donor base to help begin the formation of the

first safe house in Haiti. Raising awareness across the state can help
the foundation of the organization.
Threats: Oakbrook Church, the church that does the most sponsorship
for Nadege Inc., has devoted a lot of the funding they receive through
tithing to Project 117. Project 117 is a non-profit organization that builds
schools in Haiti. With most of the funds going to them, people of the
congregation may not want to donate to another cause. From this, there
is a threat of lack of funding.
Kokomo, Indiana is also a relatively small town to start a nonprofit organization. This town already has a lot of organizations that the
community supports. For example, the local food pantry is a popular
place that many groups will support. With many other organizations
available to a Kokomo resident at a local scale, it is easier for them to
become involved within their own community. Volunteering with an
organization like Nadege, Inc., if one wanted to see their effort to the
organization at work, they would have to volunteer on a mission trip to
Haiti.

Additional Research
In order to fully understand the problem of sexual violence in Haiti, I sat
down with a few members of the organization as well as people who
dedicate their time to volunteering for the Nadege, Inc. The members of
the organization were, Emily Hays, Melissa Kidwell, and Danielle Blume.
Emily and Melissa are co-founders of Nadege, Inc. I heard their stories
as to why their hearts broke for the women in Haiti. Danielle Blume is an
intern for Nadege, Inc., and she told me why she chose to join Nadeges
cause after graduation instead of accepting a full time job at an
organization.
We also discussed the next steps for Nadege, Inc. and how they are
hoping that the organization will grow throughout Indiana. Emily is hoping
that the expansion of Oakbrook Church will help.
The next two people I interviewed were Maddy Baldini and Karlie Shaw.
Both of these young women have been by Emily Hays side during her
time of forming Nadege and many years before that. They talked about
how this issue has also been apart of their faith since they were both in
high school.

Problem Definition:
Problem Statement:
Nadege, Inc. opened in May of 2015 in Kokomo, Indiana. Nadege, Inc.
faces one common problem; they are starting in too small of a town to
really start the goals of the organization. Starting in the small town of
Kokomo there has been a lack of donors, interest, and funding to begin
their work in Haiti.

Program Goal:
The overall goal for Nadege, Inc. is to raise awareness of the
organization that will potentially help build a donor base in order to begin
the construction of the first Nadege Safe House in Haiti.

Key Objectives:
In order to raise awareness and begin to build the donor base I plan to
use the following objectives:
1. Organize a new holiday centered event in order to raise more
funds.

2. Create a video series to highlight the issue of sex violence in Haiti.

As well as highlighting the work that is occurring in Haiti.
3. Organize a donor appreciation luncheon to close the gap between
donors and the organization.

Nadege, Inc., takes next steps to building safe house in Haiti

KOKOMO, Ind. (Nov. 21, 2016) --- Back in July, Nadege, Inc. hosted its first Restored
Gala where the proceeds went to the initial process of beginning construction of
their first safe house in Haiti.

We were $5,000 shy of starting construction after our Restored Gala in July, says
Emily Hays, co-founder of Nadege, Inc. After hearing that we were shy, a generous
donor matched the amount that we needed and now we are able to begin
construction.

The Nadege, Inc. team will begin construction by building a security wall around the
safe house. The goal of the security wall is to provide safety to the women who will
be living in the safe house.

Emily Hays and a group of her friends formed Nadege, Inc. in May of 2015. Emilys
heart broke when she heard of the large prevalence of sexual violence against
women in Haiti. Emily was the first person to meet Nadege, a woman who looked to
be a victim of sexual violence. They met in 2012 and Emily could not stop thinking
about her.

The tagline of Nadege, Inc. is Hope Restored. Nadeges name means, hope. The
overarching goal of this organization is to restore the hope in women over the age of
18 who have been victims of sexual violence.

being built in Haiti please visit http://www.nadegehaiti.org.

A Night Of Elegance looks to Restore Hope for Women in Haiti

KOKOMO, IND. (Aug. 5, 2016)A hot Saturday night in July, people from Kokomo
and surrounding areas gathered for a night of appetizers and a silent auction. The events
purpose was to help build funds to begin Nadege, Inc.s, first safe house in Haiti.
The event included multiple pieces that were considered trash by most people and were
restored back to life and put up for auction. Nadege, Inc. is centered on the idea of
Restoring Hope. Restoring the items that were considered trash is an example of what
Nadege is doing in Haiti.
Emily Hays, co-founder of Nadege, Inc., says that her heart broke after meeting Nadege,
the woman who inspired the non-profit, and decided that she wanted to do something
about sexual violence against women. Emily could not shake the fact that the women and
children she and her mission trip team do not have any way to overcome the traumatic
events that happened to them.
A group of us took a research trip in November of 2014 to learn more about what was
happening on the ground for Haitian women. After visiting 7 organizations, it became
obvious that very little was being done. We knew we had to do something, says Hays
about her time in Haiti prior to starting her organization.
Nadege, Inc., is working towards building their first safe house in Haiti. They wish to
bring women and their children into their space and rehabilitate them so they may be
successful.
The funds raised from the Restored Gala helped Nadege, Inc., begin the first steps of
construction at their site in Haiti. Construction is set to begin in November.
We were nervous that we were not going to be able to raise all of the money to begin
construction, says Melissa Kidwell, co-founder of Nadege, Inc. Someone heard that we
were $5,000 dollars behind and matched our needs.
Nadege, Inc., is excited for the next steps in the process of building their first safe house.
They are also hoping that next years Restored Gala will be more successful than the first.

The most popular item of the night, a reclaimed bicycle that was sold for over $300.

To Whom It May Concern:
Nadege, Inc., is a non-profit organization located in Kokomo, Indiana but the people who
benefit from Nadeges mission are in Haiti. Nadege, Inc., works to build safe house for
women who have been victims of sexual violence and their children and Haiti.
This organization was formed in 2015 after three members of the organization met a
woman named Nadege who was likely to be a victim of sexual violence. Being shaken by
the fact not enough is being done for sexual violence victims Emily Hays, co-founder,
and her team decided to form this non-profit.
Nadege, Inc., hosts two main events each year to sustain profits to begin construction in
Haiti. This year alone, Nadege, Inc., has raised $45,000 and has begun construction. The
first step in the construction process is building a wall surrounding the property. This
wall will ensure safety for the women and their children.

Local Woman Begins Organization to Restore Hope in Haiti

KOKOMO, IND. Emily Hays, co-founder of Nadege, Inc., says that she can most
likely be described as a foodie, lover of people & dogs, traveler, and reader. Emily is a
passionate member of Oakbrook Community Church where her passion for Haiti began.
I initially took a trip through my church after the earthquake in 2010, says
Emily. From that trip, Emilys passion for serving others grew. She found her self later
taking more and more trips to Haiti.
After taking several trips and helping start up Project 117, a non-profit that builds
schools for the left behind in Haiti that is originated out of Kokomo, Emily had a calling
of her own. In 2012, after beginning the first school with Project 117 Emily met a woman
named Nadege.
On our research trip for Project 117, we were going around and surveying people
who do or do not go to school, says Hays This is where I met Nadege and her three
children.
During the meeting with Nadege and Emily, Emily found herself very intrigued
by Nadege as a person. Emily then went on to ask about the father of Nadeges children
to see if she would ever marry him. The woman then became very angry. Nadege shouted
No, No, No to Emily and the people around her. This was when Emily and the others
around her began to suspect that Nadege had been a victim of sexual violence.
This type of situation is typical of women in Haiti and other third world countries.
The men will rape the women and leave them. In Nadeges case the man who raped her is
the same man to the father of all three of her children.

20

Emily left that mission trip and came back to her life in the states. She tried to
continue to move on from going on to Haiti and meeting Nadege. She continued to live
her life in Kokomo but felt that some part of her life was missing.
After trying to ignore the burden that was placed on her heart, Emily and her
friends went to Haiti once more where they met Nadege again. The group decided it was
time to start an organization.
Emily says, I was never interested in starting an organization, period. Especially
in another country. Little did she know that in just under 3 years, Nadege, Inc. would be
formed.
The board currently consists of nine total members with one common mission, to
restore hope in victims of sexual violence in Haiti. The team is currently in the beginning
process of building a safe house for the victims and their children.
Nadege, Inc. currently is raising funds by hosting two major events each year. In
July, the group hosted their first Restored Gala. In December, they will put on a Breakfast
with Santa event.
The Restored Gala is a silent auction where members of the community take the
time to restore an item that would originally be thrown away. The event was very
successful for the organization. Over $1,500 was raised in the efforts that included,
tickets to the event and purchasing art and merchandise.
This December will be the second annual Breakfast with Santa. This event
includes; cookie decorating, pictures with Santa, and live reindeer. It is a great
opportunity to bring families out to raise awareness for a cause bigger than themselves.
Breakfast for Santa is also a great time to have families together for the holiday season.

21

Nadege, Inc. has had a great start, but they are really lacking in generating
awareness from a lot of people. The current struggle is the support mostly comes from
Oakbrook Church, where most of the team is from. With a community so involved with
another organization, Project 117, it is hard to be the donor of two organizations.
We are currently working with other churches in order to gain a bigger donor
system, says Hays. The group is currently lacking funds for their organization. The
hopes are to expand to multiple cities to gain a large audience. Our target audiences
right now are women from the ages 18-50. In order to build the first safe house a diverse
volunteer force will be needed.
The community Emily lives in really rallies behind her. I have known Emily for
ten years now, says Alison Littrell, who considers Emily as one of her mentors, Emily
is not a really a person to get emotional about many things. When she told me about the
woman, Nadege, you could tell that she is really passionate about helping people like
her.
From the time I have known Emily, she has never been doing a job that she is
actually passionate about. She worked at Blue Rhino when I first met her, but I knew
that, that was not the job for her. She is finally working with victims of human trafficking
in Indianapolis and I can tell she has really found her calling in life, says Littrell.
Emily feels like this is her true calling. Nadege was a woman who did not leave
my mind from the moment I left Haiti in 2012 she says. Her continuing efforts
My biggest hope is to see the graduate of the safe house either return to work at
the safe house and witness them change their own culture, Emily says is her future goal.

22

One day, we want to go out of business. We want to see the women changing others
around them instead of us.
The organizations next event will take place on Saturday, October 1st. The event
is The Giving Circle, which will take place at the Watanabe Estate in Indianapolis, Ind.
The evening will feature wine and cheeses while the discussion of restoring hope for
women in Haiti. The event is $100 per person. All proceeds will go towards building
Nadeges first safe house.
