Personal Statement

I decided to become a teacher after my experience in Seoul, South Korea, teaching ESL to

graders. Without any skills or knowledge about teaching, I went into the classroom only
to feel overwhelmed by the chaos that ensued. After six months of working in this chaotic
environment, I finally met an experienced co-teacher that taught me the importance of preparing
lesson plans and materials. She challenged me to be creative while meeting the objectives of the
lesson and transformed my chaotic classroom into one that was organized and engaging. This
experience made me appreciate teaching as a profession as I realized the methodical process
involved in teaching. After three years of working in Seoul, I decided to return to America to
pursue a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction (EC-6) at the University of Houston.

During my first semester of graduate school, I visited schools in various districts. During
my second semester, I observed a first grade ELA classroom at a school in HISD. During my third
and fourth semesters, I student taught. Out of my whole experience as a graduate student, I
believe my experiences in student teaching taught me the most. While I enjoyed taking
theoretical courses during my first year, I felt the utility in taking methods courses during my
second year while student teaching.

Statement of Purpose
According to Angela Duckworth, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, Grit is
passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with
your future, day in [and] day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and
working really hard to make that future a reality. I believe grit is the essential ingredient
educators must possess to push through those grueling days when the to-do list is endless. This
word encapsulates the defining characteristic I hope to embody as a first-year teacher.
My goal as a first-year teacher is to build relationships with students, parents, teachers,
administrators, and the surrounding community. I believe building a professional rapport is the
key to a successful year. I will do this by being open to constructive feedback and clearly
communicating with everyone involved. On this foundation of forging strong relationships, I want
to focus on classroom management and student-centered instruction. I plan to address the
former by establishing rules and expectationsas well as routines and proceduresin the first
few weeks of school. I plan to address the latter by implementing differentiated instruction
through workstations and using various learning approaches such as problem-based learning and
project-based learning.
