Design Requirements
The American Society of Civil Engineers-Najah National University Student
Chapter is pleasure to announce the First National Competition for
Construction Wooden Bridges that will be held at An-Najah National
University-New campus Nablus city Palestine. ASCE-An Najah National
University student chapter would like to invite you to participate in this event.
Bridge competition is a great opportunity to connect academic knowledge to
the application stage, beside the interaction between future engineers.
A) Allowable Materials
Each group will have the following materials at the day of competition
1) Total of 15 m POPLAR WOOD (8 X 8 mm)(1 m long, 15 stick).
2) Two glue types (UHU glue).
3) Two Scalpels.
4) One Ruler.
5) Three Pencils.
B) Design Criteria
The final model must satisfy the following conditions to avoid disqualification:
1) The bridge must span between supports 50 cm. Supports are provided by use of
tables (upward support only). Total length is greater than 52, less than 60 cm.
2) Total height of bridge (Extreme top to extreme bottom) must be greater than 12
cm, less than 20 cm.
3) Total width of bridge (Between extreme sides) must be greater than 15 cm, less
than 25cm.
4) Glue must be used at the interfacial contact regions, not at the sides.
5) No duplication is allowed.
6) Overlapping is allowed at maximum of 15 mm overlapping.
11) Two types of plywood plates could be used (Each team can select one of them)
40X40 mm, or 75X75 mm.
12) The way of bridge must be free of obstacles (like bracings) at clear height of 8
cm. In other words, No crossing braces could be provided between the two sides
of bridge, clearly 8 cm.
13) Each group has to indicate which level is the deck slab level before testing.
C) Bridges Evaluation
The Evaluation will be conducted by team of professors, Engineers. Two stages of
evaluation:
1) Quality of design (40%):
Performance of connections and glue
Providing the required spacing
Architectural design in-term of arch shape and structural performance.
Preventing premature failures
D) Teams
1) Each team must consist of five (5) students, minimum of four (4).
2) Master students are allowed to participate; Maximum two per team.
E) Disqualification
Any team or bridge that doesnt satisfy regulations in-term of Material, Design criteria, or
teams regulations will be considered Disqualified.
F) Guidelines
1) Failure can occur from "lateral instability" if the model is tall and narrow.
2) The area over which the force is applied can "punch through" the deck. So
strengthen the deck under the loading area.
3) Connections are usually the weakest links. Use lap connections, avoid butt
connections
4) Joints are critical parts of any bridge design. Poor joint construction can
greatly reduce the load carrying capacity of the bridge.
5) For any truss design, some members will be in tension (pulled), and some will
be in compression (squeezed). Decide which members are going to be in
tension, and which are going to be in compression. Design these members
accordingly.
6) Reinforce the deck beams at the loading points to prevent premature failure of
the bridge.
7) Most I-beams or truss failures result from twisting of the member or the truss,
so provide adequate bracing to prevent twisting of members.
8) Dont be afraid to ask someone knowledgeable in bridge design for some tips.
Be sure however, that the design is completely a student design. Finally, this is
a team project, be sure to get input from all members of the design team.
List of joint:
G) Awards
1st place (overall) : 800 NIS
2nd Place (overall) : 500 NIS
3rd Place (overall) : 200 NIS
1st place (Quality) : 250 NIS
1st place (Performance) : 250 NIS
Thats not all what we have, wait for surprises
Note: No duplicated awards, in case one team satisfy two awards, it will go for the next
competitive team.
