their way of living in the province.
-Baldo was ignoring to his older brother's question about why did they have to go to Waig instead of
Camino Real. (The reason is that their father wanted to test Maria if she is worthy to be Leon's wife.)
-Baldo discussed their travel to his father.
-Leon's entire family talked to Maria. his Father's voice became livelier than before when he talked to
her (which means he accepted her wholeheartedly.)
Summary:
In the story, Leon arrived with his wife in the country meeting Leon's brother for the first time. They
took a surprising route home for Leon, but it was meant as a test for the wife to see if she could
endure the sacrifices she made and meet her new family.
The entire story serves as a test for the wife. Each test was to show whether the woman could
indeed live with strangers all for love. This can be a secondary theme, but more importantly, it is a
theme in which the main character learns that though there are sacrifices it is worth it in the end.
He even begins to think about getting himself a wife eventually. This helps to show the theme and
how it developed. He notices through all the tests the woman though afraid will preserve through the
trials in order to be happy with Leon at his home.
The fact that the country is different from the city can be somewhat daunting the closer they get to
the home, but she still manages to overcome and under come any trials.
The wife admits to having some fear, but also shows clearly it did not stop her. This is why the theme
is related to how one may have to give up some things in order to find happiness in life or at least the
best happiness that can be found in that particular life.
Critique:
How My Brother Leon Brought Home a Wife, a story about love as well as sacrifice. Here, Manuel E.
Araguilla had showed how a woman may have to surrender a small part of her life in order to be
happy. She is Maria. Leons beautiful wife.
Maria grew up in a city. But because of love, she tended to be with Leon. It was the reason why
Leons family especially his father gave her a test through a carabao name Labang. Shes not
supposed to be afraid with it, and she had been passed the challenged. Leons father started to like
her at this moment most especially when she sang Sky Sown with Stars together with Leon.
As I finished reading this, it seems like I am not contented with the test that was given to Maria. It
was not even Challenging. Why? Because being a woman, it is natural to have fear with a carabao.
And truth to be told, while reading this, I am expecting deeper challenges for her. I just come to think
that to overcome her fear to a carabao is not enough to prove that she really loves Leon. What the
important is, she can live with them in spite of their differences in life.
However, this story is still interesting but not as much entertaining. One thing more, this story
contained such values that we should have. We can also be able to relate it to our daily lives,
especially when we have to meet our special someone to our family.
The theme of 'How My Brother Leon Brought Home a Wife' is that one must preserve, even
through certain sacrifices, in order to reach one's goal. In particular:
- One may have to surrender a small part of one's life in order to be happy.

picture being offered by the author.
The story started when Leon and his younger brother were both waiting for the
arrival of Leon's wife, Maria, riding in a carretela. As Baldo saw his older brother's
wife, he described her as lovely, tall, and beautiful. He narrated their journey to
Nagrebcan, their hometown. Leon wondered why Baldo drove them to the Waig
instead on the Camino Real. Baldo answered that he drove them to the Waig
because their father told him to follow the Waig. The Waig route served as a test for
the wife to see if she could really live in a province which was very different in a life
in a city where she lived. While travelling, Maria described the place of Leon as
clean, and free of dust and smoke. Maria admitted of having some fears if the father
of Leon would not accept her as to be his daughter-in-law because she may not able
to survive the life in the province. When they got home, Leon's family talked to
Maria. Baldo and his father had a conversation about what had happened while they
were travelling. The father asked Baldo if Maria was afraid in their place. Baldo
answered that Maria was not afraid and instead she enjoyed the journey.
I like the story because it taught me about respect and acceptance of one's life.
In order to have a harmonious and long-lasting relationship you must show respect
to each other and the family. And if you really love a person you should accept who
he/she is, and what he/she is.
The writing style of the author was good because he used figurative languages
which made the story more interesting, convincing, and beautiful. The message of
the story was easy to understand because it was clear and concise. The characters
of the story were presented well of what were their roles. The flow or the plot or the
scenes in the story were organized. The words used were appropriate. The story
also taught us many moral lessons in life like one may have to sacrifice small part of
ones life in order to be happy.
