Description: This course examines service learning and potential career paths for
professionals in Child Development and Family Studies. Field Placement Required.
Prerequisites: A signed major in Child Development or Family Studies, HDF 100, or
HDF 211, or PSY 220.
Special Requirements of the Course:
This course introduces students to some of the opportunities and careers in
human service fields. Due to the nature of human services and HIPPA
regulations for client / patient confidentiality, we are not able to fully match
students with career interests. Therefore we approach our work in this course
as trying to help you understand the needs of many of our potential clients
with an emphasis on those most often marginalized by poverty, emotional
and mental disabilities, and substance abuse.
Students who take this course will complete 60 hours of volunteer work in a
human service agency. The types of sites that students visit will be
determined by their own interests, but should include diverse
populations. You are strongly encouraged to work at sites that have some
aspect of case management with their services. All hours must be
completed within the enrolled semester. All arrangements must be
made in advance and in cooperation with the course instructor.
Ability to bring a laptop, Ipad/ Tablet, Smart Phone to class for internet
research searches. Your device must be synced with CMUs intranet services.
Please do not use these devices during class time for activities other than
instructed for the class. Any use of these devices other than directed by Dr.
Bailey will result in a class pop quiz.
Willingness to develop critical reflection on personal beliefs and values and
develop a sensitivity and respect for differences.
Ability & willingness to work in small groups in the classroom and with
Blackboard.
A passing grade for this course is 77% and higher which is the equivalent of a
C+. You must receive a C+ or higher in order to take the next course in the
professional sequence, HDF 317 or 319.

Course Objectives: After completing this course the student will:


1. Identify the diversity of populations that need assistance as well the
processes used for determining services designed to meet the needs of
individual and families.
2. Initiate the development of skills for a career in the field of human services.
3. Recognize and respect the diversity of values and the complexity of value
choice in a pluralistic society while understanding the character and quality
of human social conduct.
4. Demonstrate the skills necessary for securing future employment, admission
to graduate studies, and internship opportunities.
5. Synthesize professional ethical standards of Human Services, Child
Development, and Family Life Educators and critically examine ethical issues
for defining personal beliefs and practices.

COURSE WORK AND GRADING ACTIVITIES


Field Work: 100 points
Students are required to work at one (1) or two (2) service-learning sites for a total
of 60 hours. These 60 hours are converted to 100 points. It is recommended that
you select two different sites to obtain varied experiences in the field. However, this
may be difficult so we will accept 1 site that has opportunity for observing case
management and multiple client services. Please talk with Dr. Bailey if you have
questions. Field work is worth 100 points and must be completed by
December 7th.
A Volunteer Site Form must be completed for each site you plan to work and
must be done prior to your start date. Please complete the form at least 1 week
prior to starting. You cannot start until the form is completed and approved.
Hours worked before these forms are submitted and approved cannot be
counted towards your Field Work.
o Volunteer Site Form #1 is due no later than September 14 th and submitted
by 3:30 pm. Late submissions will lose 1 point from the total field work
hours for each day late.
o Volunteer Site Form #2 is due no later than October 5 th by 3:30 pm. If you
are doing 1 site you must send Dr. Bailey an email stating so.
o Course points will be subtracted for late submittals of the Site Forms. One
point will be deducted from your Field Hours score for every day they are
late.
o You must earn a Satisfactory rating (3 or better) on the Site Evaluation
Form for each applicable category.
o As an introduction to the profession, it is essential that you practice skills
of dependability and engagement at your field site. As such, two ratings of
less than 3 will result in failure of the course. Showing up to the field site
late, not showing up, and failure to call your site if something prevents

you from being on-time will result in an unsatisfactory rating on your


evaluation.
Job Shadowing: Job shadowing is offered as an option for part of your field
work. This activity requires you to shadow a professional at one full day of work.
The professional must be in human services and a full day means 6 to 8 hours. If
you want to do a Job Shadow, you must complete the Job Shadow Form and
submit it before you do the shadowing. Due dates for Job Shadow Forms are
the same as for Work Site Forms: September 14th and October 5th. When
you have completed your approved Job Shadow you complete the reflection
questions. Verification of worked hours is done on a separate form but you need
to turn both forms in together. Job Shadow Reflection papers are due within a
week of your observation. Late papers are accepted but subject to a 1 point loss
for each day they are turned in late.

Important Details
Three points will be subtracted from the Field Work grade for each hour under
the required 60 hours. Example: Field Work = 100 points, - 3 points for
completing 59 hours (1 x 3 = 3) = 97 points for Field Hours. Example 2: 100
points 12 points for completing 56 hours (4 x -3 = -12)= 88 points for Field
Hours.
Late submissions for field hours will be accepted with 5 points being subtracted
from the grade points for each day late. When asking to submit your hours past
the December 7th due date, evaluate the lost 5 points for each day against the -3
points for each hour under 60 hours. Sometimes it is better to lose a couple of
points for hours.
All evaluations may be sent as an email attachment from your Site Supervisor to
Dr. Bailey, OR as a fax to the EHS Office 989-774-2435. Our Office sends the
Evaluation Forms to the Site Supervisors.
December 9th is the final day for Supervisors to send their evaluations. My Office
handles all evaluations.
Any misrepresentation or falsification of hours will be deemed as an act of
Academic Dishonesty resulting in no field-work points being given and a failing
grade for the course.
In Class Activities: 30 points
Each week you have the opportunity to apply the assigned readings with the
lectures with structured learning activities to earn activity points. Activities will be 5
points with some activities carrying across from one week into the next requiring
work being completed between class meetings. Class work cant be made up but it
is your responsibility to get the missed information. Dr. Bailey will not respond to
emails asking for missed class information. However, you can come during office
hours to get this information.
Reading Quizzes: 100 points
There are 8 quizzes based on assigned readings that must be completed by 3
pm before our class meetings. Quizzes are based on the syllabus, textbook and
as additional reading materials included in the weekly folders.

Questions are a combination of multiple choice, matching, true and false, and
fill-in-the-blanks and short answers. Occasionally a quiz may be in an essay
format.
The Orientation quiz is based on the online orientation with 10 questions being
randomly pulled from a pool or question. This 30 point quiz has 3 points for each
question. Most of the remaining 7 quizzes will have 10 questions from a pool of
questions based on the assigned readings. Each question will be worth 1 point
for a total of 10 points a quiz. No two quizzes will be alike. You must be ready to
take the quiz when you begin so plan accordingly.
The Orientation Quiz is available until 5 pm Friday September 2 nd. All other
quizzes are due 3 pm on Wednesday unless otherwise stated.
Missed quizzes receive no credit. There are no make-ups for missed quizzes.
These Quizzes are very hard. You must be well prepared for them. Preparation
includes reading the text and outlining the important information. It is not
enough to read the book. You need to really understand what the information
means and how to apply it. Please note that many of the previous students
thought they knew this stuff after a quick reading of the text but they really did
not understand it and they did very badly on the quizzes.
Quizzes are timed for 20 minutes. Each question is delivered one at a time with
no backtracking. When everyone has completed the quiz, you will get your score
but you will not get individual question results. We do not go over the results in
class, as each quiz is different. If you would like to see the results of your quiz,
you can make an appointment as I am happy to go over your quiz and assist you
in preparing for the next.
Professional Portfolio: 100 points
An increasing number of professionals are creating portfolios to display their skills
and talents. Creating a portfolio will enable you to see who you are and what kinds
of services you offer future employers. In this class you will develop an electronic
portfolio using Livebinder following general guidelines provided in assigned readings
and a class lecture. This portfolio will be a permanent collection that you will always
have access. Completed Portfolios are due December 7. Instructions will be
reviewed in class.
Exams: 70 points
Exams are multiple choice, short answer and essay reflection applications where
you explain specific concepts that we cover in class through readings, lectures, and
activities. There is a Mid-Term (worth 50 points) and Final Exam (worth 20 points).

and go on to HDF 317 or HDF 319.

Course Policies:
1. The instructor reserves the right to modify this course syllabus and any class
activity points.
2. No make-up exams will be provided unless under emergency situations
approved by the university.
3. Late assignments will be accepted with 1 to 5 points being subtracted from
the grade for each day late. Point loss is determined by Dr. Bailey.
4. Each student has one week from the date that an assignment is returned to
review their grade with the instructor. Once the one week period has passed,
the grade will stand.
5. It is recommended that you monitor your grade weekly. If you become aware
of a discrepancy between what you believe you have earned and what
appears in the Blackboard gradebook, it is your responsibility to bring it my
attention. Changes to Bb gradebook must be made within 7 days of the
originally posted grade. No Exceptions.
6. Sites listed on the class volunteer site list are considered pre-approved; You
must get approval for any site that is NOT listed on the class
volunteer site list. An electronic site form is posted on Blackboard so you
can complete it and submit it online but submittal does not guarantee
approval if the site is not on the pre-approved list. Please talk with Dr. Bailey
before you submit a site that is not on the list.
7. You MUST submit a Work-Site Site Form PRIOR to starting any volunteer hours
at a site. No hours can be used towards Field Work until the Work-Site Forms
are accepted by Dr. Bailey.
8. Any site changes must be pre-approved by Dr. Bailey.
9. Though all worksite forms are sent via email, please make sure your site
supervisor has received all necessary paperwork. It is your responsibility to
make sure your site supervisor has received the needed forms for your
evaluation. Please verify your field supervisor has the evaluation forms
needed to complete your evaluation and notify Dr. Bailey if those forms have
not been received by week 12.

10.Your volunteer site forms must be submitted by the deadline(s) listed on the
course syllabus. Points WILL be deducted if they are submitted late!
11.The final evaluation for each site must be signed by the site supervisor and
returned to Dr. Bailey via email or by fax to the HEV Office. All volunteer
hours and final evaluations must be completed by week 15.
12.If your site has training required for volunteers, you may use no more than 10
hours of your training hours towards volunteer site requirements.
13.Please know that our class meets from 3:30 to 5:20 pm. If you leave early or
come in late you will not receive class activity points. Please do not ask to be
excused early. Anyone requesting to be excused early will automatically have
2 points deducted from their class activity points.
14.Any falsification of hours at a worksite will result in zero points being
allocated for Field Work and will be considered an act of Academic Dishonesty
and reported to the Office of Student Affairs.
15.Out of respect to the class, please turn off your cell phones during class and
refrain from using social networking sites on your computer or phone. If you
have a special circumstance (i.e. family emergency) that requires you to
leave your phone on, please set it to vibrate and let me know about your
situation before class begins. If you engage in electronic communication, cell
phone, text messaging, face booking, tweeting, instant messaging, checking
email, or whatever new technology emerges that we currently dont know
about but find to be intruding or distracting, there will be an immediate POP
QUIZ for the entire class. If you find the instructor engaging in the same type
of activity without the class prior approval, everyone in the class will earn 2
extra credit points. But PLEASE Refrain from such activity as it spoils
everyones evening.
16.As a professional in the field of human services I am excited that you have
chosen Child Development and Family Studies as your major. I will do
everything within my ability to assist you. However, you must be committed
to doing everything in your ability to complete the requirements of this
course. Please come talk with me throughout the semester so I can get to
know you and better shape our class to meet your needs.
