Library Happenings
Ms. Panamenos class is creating their own
publisher newsletter of their favorite animal.
After which they are going to compare and
contrast the features of each others animals.
Ms. Lowrys class just finished learning about
choosing good websites for research. They
looked carefully at false fact websites. My
favorite is http://allaboutexplorers.com/
which is a great looking website stuffed with
tons of misinformation about explorers that
takes a careful reading to discover its faults.
Ms. Picklesimer and Ms. Duerschs classes
just completed a large project learning about
all the genres, the capstone of which is a fun
smartboard activity in teams. Its a favorite
activity each year for the 4th graders.
This news is brought to you by your
Library Technology Teacher, Stephanie
Bauman who is eagerly awaiting the
opportunity to discuss these exciting topics,
help support your curriculum, and collaborate
on lessons. Come visit me in the library!

Did You Know?

High quality library media programs with highly-qualified library technology teachers
are factors linked to improving school effectiveness and closing the achievement gap
for all students. There are seven factors that describe high-quality K-12 library programs: the first is having a quality set of Core Standards to direct instruction.
Utah revised and approved new Core Standards for Library Media in 2015. These standards address three Core Areas: Reading Engagement, Information and Research, and
Media Literacy. Media Literacy is the competent application of literacy skills to media
and technology messages to help students develop as critical thinkers. Media Literacy
can be integrated into any content area to help you develop students skills as thinkers,
communicators, and active digital citizens. LTTs also teach lessons on Media Literacy
during library time all year.

Dianas White House Garden by Elisa Cabone

Diana was a little girl who got to live at White House! Her dad was the chief
adviser to President Roosevelt. World War II is raging and Diana is desperate to
help, but her attempts never quite work out. Then President Roosevelt comes
up with the idea for everyone in the country to plant Victory Gardens to grow
their own food. Diana steps up to help with the garden at the White House and
her efforts help promote Victory Gardens in the whole country. This is a fantastic true story! There is a tangible contribution that a child made to something
that was big and overwhelming. This lesson is as important today as it was then. Students will also be entertained by Dianas failed efforts. The illustrations are clear
and easy to share with a group. This story also promotes
living green! The Author and Illustrator notes are a mustread to explain background, such as why all the staff are
African American. SB

Tech TipPioneer Online Library

One of the best hidden gems for teaching our students is the
Online Pioneer Library. If you dont use it or know what it does, it is a reference library with amazing options for kids. My favorite link is to WorldBook
online for kids. It can change to Spanish in the click of a button and will help
with research. I also love CultureGrams for state and country reports.
There are lesson plans of all types and for all ages. I love the art and research
lesson plans that are complete with visuals. Students who are searching for a
great book will benefit from the Novelist K-8 Plus, which is a great reference
when teaching genre or if a student just wants to branch out and try new
books. Logins for teachers are automatic at school; use your UEN login on other computers. Student logins change yearly. This year, go to http://
onlinelibrary.uen.org and use Login Name: online Password: research
