Fall 2016
Prerequisites The prerequisite for the course is Grade 12 Advanced Functions (MHF4U).
Textbook.
The bookstore will sell a hardcopy of this book, this should cost approximately 150$. You can also
purchase an eBook version for approximately 90$. These are also purchased at the bookstore, and
consist of a code used to access the Connect system, which includes the eBook. This semester we
are not using the publishers online HW system, so please look for used copies of the book to save
yourself some money.
Course Website.
You can access the MAT 223 course website through the University of Toronto
Portal ( https://portal.utoronto.ca/). After logging in, click on the course title under My Courses to
enter the website. Homework assignments, messages, handouts and other important information will
be posted on the website, so you should check it regularly. You will also be able to see your marks for
the written homework assignments, quizzes and term tests online.
Office Hours.
Please do not be hesitant to come ask us for help. The sta of MAT 223 are
available for extra help outside of class, during our scheduled office hours (see above for dates/times).
In addition to these hours, before tests and exams we will hold extra office hours. The times and
locations of these hours will be posted on the course webpage. If you cannot make any of the scheduled
office hours, please let the instructor know, and hopefully an alternate meeting can be arranged.
Tutorials.
Tutorials will begin the week of September 12. All students must be enrolled in a
tutorial section (on ROSI). You should only attend the tutorial you are enrolled in. The main purpose
of the tutorial is to give you an opportunity to ask questions and work through examples together
with your TA. To get the most from your tutorial, you should review the lecture material and try the
assigned problems before your tutorial, so that you come prepared with questions.
Marking Scheme
Your final grade will be determined as follows:

Quizzes (3 @ 15%)

Quizzes
There will be 3 (three) quizzes. Quizzes will take place during the PRA section (Wednesday
5-6pm). The dates of the quizzes are as follows:
Quiz #1
Wednesday, September 28
Quiz #2
Wednesday, November 2
Quiz #3
Wednesday, November 23
your absence on ROSI and submit your documentation in person to J. Thind, within one week
of the quiz. Please use the relevant forms for your documentation. For medical notes, you MUST
use the official UTM Verification of Illness or Injury form, which can be downloaded from
the course website. Please keep a copy of the form for your own records.
The marking scheme will be adjusted as follows for students who have missed a quiz because of
illness or any other (approved) legitimate reason.
Final Exam
The final exam of the course will take place during the examination period in September, and will be
3 hours long. It will cover all the material presented in lectures. The date, time, and location of the
exam will be arranged by the Exams Office, and posted once it has been set.
Homework Assignments
There will be 8 (eight) homework assignments in this course. Please see the course outline, on the last
page, for the due dates.
Late assignments will not be accepted.
Assignments consist of two components: written and online.

day of the week the assignment is due (regardless of which TUT you are enrolled in). Technical issues
will not be accepted as an excuse for not completing an assignment. (So dont wait until the last
minute to start.)
The online component of each assignment will be done using the WebWork system. This system is
integrated into Blackboard. You can access it via our course page by following the WebWork link
on our course page. You do not need an additional username or account - you simply log in to the
course page via Portal.
Help
If you need help there are many resources available to you. Please come and ask us for help as soon as
you need it. Try not to fall behind. All course sta have office hours, which are posted on the course
page, and at the top of this handout. You will have opportunities to ask questions in Tutorials. The
MCS department runs a Math Help Centre (DH 2027), which is staed by TAs for drop-in math
help. We have also posted some links in the course page to additional online material (videos, online
tutorials and assessment tools). These can be found in the links/help section of the course page.
You may find working in a small study group can be very helpful. The Academic Skills Centre also
has much to oer. They are located in the Library, and have many useful tools and resources.
