water, was prepared by Technical Committee FD 009: Potable water, under the general direction

SCOPE
This Zimbabwe Standard specifies the description, treatment, testing, packaging
and labelling of water that is not natural mineral water. The water may be offered
as packaged non-carbonated (still) water or as packaged carbonated
(sparkling) water with or without permitted substances.
Where this SAZ Standard conflicts in any way with the relevant Government Acts
and Regulations, the requirements of the Government Acts and Regulations take
precedence over those in this standard.
NOTE. The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed in the
Preface.

DEFINITIONS
For the purpose of this Zimbabwe Standard the following definitions shall apply:
2.1
Additive. Any substance which is included in the recipe but which is used to
fulfill a certain specified function. It is usually used in small quantities (usually
between 0.1 % and 5 %) and remain in the food as consumed. This excludes
those listed in the Food and Food Standards Act.
2.2
Approved. Approved by the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare or the local
health authority or both, but in relation to the use of the certification mark,
approved by the Standards Association of Zimbabwe.
2.3
Best Before Date. A date no later than 48 h prior to the expiration of the
estimated shelf life of a food product.

Lot. A collection of sealed bottles of the same size, type and style which have
been manufactured, processed and packaged under essentially the same conditions
as agreed between the bottler and the Standards Association of Zimbabwe.
2.6
Product Unit. One unit of the final product consisting of the sealed bottle.
3.
PRODUCT DESIGNATION
3.1
Packaged Drinking Water. Water which is not mineral water that is:

not subjected to any treatment other than those permitted by this standard;
and
d)

Carbonated Bottled Water. Water that has been made effervescent by the addition
of carbon dioxide.
3.3
Non-Carbonated Water. Water that does not contain free carbon dioxide or other
gases in excess of the amount necessary to keep dissolved the hydrogen,
bicarbonate salts that are present in the water

MANUFACTURING
4.1
Hygiene. The product covered by the provision of this standard shall be prepared
in accordance with the appropriate sections ZWS 126: Part 1.
4.2
Handling
4.2.1
The source, or point of emergence of the water obtained in accordance with 3.1
shall be protected against risk of pollution.

The installations for collection, the pipes and the reservoirs shall be made
from material suited to the water and in such a way as to prevent the
introduction of foreign substances into the water.

Type of Bottles and Closures for the Finished Product. The product shall be
packed in hermetically sealed suitable bottles that will not contaminate or
adulterate the product. The closures shall have tamper-proof seal. The bottles and
closures shall be delivered to the filling plant in sealed packaging.
5.4
Condition of Bottles for the Finished Product. At the time of filling, all bottles
shall be sanitized. Bottles shall be free from chips, cracks and other defects.
Crown caps shall be fitted internally with a solid cork or composition cork disc or
with an acceptable plastic disc. Bottles to be used for, the product shall not be
used to store ingredients, raw materials or other products or preparations, and
such bottles shall not be used by workers for drinking purposes.

Filling and Sealing of Bottles. Bottles shall be filled under strictly hygienic
conditions and maintained in a hygienic state. The open ends of bottles shall not be
touched by hand. Immediately after filling, the bottles shall be hermetically sealed.
Closing machines shall be kept clean. Contamination of the product by soiled
equipment or detached particles of material shall be prevented.

Inspection of Bottles

at least 6/9 in each eye, or at least 6/12 in one eye provided that the other
eye has an acuity of at least 6/6. Alternatively the sighter's visual acuity
shall have been corrected to be within the above-mentioned limits of
refraction. Colour vision of each sighter shall be Ishihara Normal 1.

PRODUCT REQUIREMENTS
Packaged drinking water shall conform to the requirements stated in the
following.

Appearance. The water shall be clear and free from visible turbidity.

Trace Elements and Substances. When tested in accordance with the methods
specified in Column 5 of Table 3 the trace elements and substances, if detected
during quarterly analysis, shall conform to the requirements of Columns 3 and 4
of the same table.

Compliance with the Standard. The lot shall be deemed to comply with the
requirements of this standard if the selected sample from the lot conforms to the
requirements laid down in Clause 6 after testing at the frequency specified in 7.2.
The lot shall also comply with the packing and marking requirements of Clause 8.

Packing. The product shall be packed in accordance with 5.3 in various units and
up to twenty litre containers, and stored away from direct sunlight.
