Article Summary

The presented research based article discusses about leadership style and leaders effort of
evolving from one style to another. The authors believe that leaders are not born but made, in fact
the article starts from a quotation Leaders are made not born, and how they develop is critical
for organizational change. The authors suggest that leaders evolve from less efficient to more
efficient style by acknowledging their own action logic (how they interpret and react to their
surrounding). As leaders acknowledge their current action logic, they can be supported and
motivated to move to a better leadership style. The authors have identified seven crucial
leadership styles through their 25 years of intensive research. These seven styles are:
Opportunist, Diplomats, Experts, Achievers, Individualists, Strategists, and Alchemist which
constituted 5%, 12%, 38%, 30%, 10%, 4% and 1% of the sample respectively.
The article not only talks about the characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of these seven
leadership styles but also suggests how leaders can evolve from one to another. They have
prescribed three techniques to evolve from Experts to Achievers to Individualists to Strategists
and beyond. The guidelines and suggestions that the authors have presented are as below:
From Experts to Achievers- Focus more on delivering results than on perfecting knowledge,
Become aware of differences between your assumptions and those of others, and Participate in
training programs on topics such as effective delegation and leading high-performing teams
From Achievers to Individualists- Reflect on the worth of the goals themselves, with the aim of
improving future goals and use annual leadership development planning to set the highest-impact
goals.
From Individualists to Strategists and Beyond- Engage in peer-to-peer development and
establish mutual mentoring with members of one's professional network who can challenge
assumptions/practices, as well as those of the company and industry.
Moreover, categories of leadership styles can be used to describe teams and organizations as
well. Teams can change their style. For instance, Strategist CEOs help Individualist senior teams
balance action and inquiry and so transform into Strategist teams. Hence, there should be the
readiness to transform beyond the current action logic. Those who are willing to work at
developing themselves and becoming more self-aware can almost certainly evolve over time into
truly transformational leaders.
