Recall some special factoring patterns.
Factoring the difference of two squares
a2 b2 = (a + b) (a b)
Factoring perfect square trinomial
a2 + 2ab + b2 = (a + b)2
(x+7) (x+7)
a2 - 2ab + b2 = (a - b)2
-7) (x -7)

Examples:
x2 49 = (x + 7) (x 7)
x2 + 14x + 49 = (x + 7)2 or
x2 - 14x + 49 = (x - 7)2 or (x

A. Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring(Part 1)

Example 1: Determine the solution set of the quadratic equation x 2 25 =
0
Solution: a2 25 = 0
(a + 5) (a 5) = 0
Factor
a + 5 = 0 or a 5 = 0
Equate each factor to 0. Then solve
for each unknown.

a = -5 or a = 5
Checking:

For a = -5
a2 25 = 0
(-5)2 25 = 0
25 25 = 0
0 =0

For a = 5
a2 25 = 0
(5)2 25 = 0
25 25 = 0
0 =0

Therefore
, the
roots/
solutions
are 5 and
-5.

Example 2: Solve the quadratic equation x2 + 16 = 8x

Solution: x2 8x + 16 = 0
Write in standard form.
(x - 4)(x 4) = 0
Factor
x 4 = 0 or x 4 = 0
Equate each factor to 0. Then solve
for each unknown.

x=4
or x = 4
If x = 4, then each factor will be 0, and therefore the
quadratic will be 0.
Checking:
For x = 4
Therefore, the root is 4. (4 is called
x2 + 16 = 8x
double root)
2
*When will a quadratic have a double root?
4 + 16 =
When the quadratic is a perfect square
8(4)
trinomial.
16+ 16 = 32
Exercise.
A. Determine the roots of the quadratic equation by factoring. Check your
answer.
1. x2 9 = 0
2. x2 + 12x + 36 = 0

B. How is the root/s of quadratic equation determined?

A. Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring(Part 2)

Example 3: Find the roots of 3x2 8x = 0
Solution: x2 8x=0
The equation was already written in
standard form.

x(x 8) = 0

common factor.

x=0

or

Since there is no constant term, x is the

x 8 = 0 Equate each factor to 0. Then solve

for each unknown.

x=8
Checking: For x = 0

x2 8x=0
02 8(0) = 0
0 =0

TRUE

For x = 8
x2 8x=0
82 8(8) = 0
64 64 = 0
0=0

Therefore
, the
roots/
solutions
are 0 and
8.

Example 4: Determine the solution set of the quadratic equation x 2 = - 3x

+ 10
Solution: x2 + 3x - 10 = 0
Write the equation in standard
form.
(x + 5) (x 2) = 0
Factor
x + 5 = 0 or x 2 = 0
Equate each factor to 0. Then solve
for each unknown.

x = - 5 or x = 2
Checking:

For x = -5
x2 = - 3x + 10
(-5)2 = -3(-5) + 10
25 = 15 + 10
25 = 25 TRUE

For x = 2
x2 = - 3x + 10
(2)2 = -3(2) + 10
4 = -6 + 10
4 = 4 TRUE

Therefore
, the
roots/
solutions
are -5
and 2.

Example 5: Determine the solution set of the quadratic equation x(3x +

1) = 10
Solution: x(3x + 1) = 10
3x2 + x = 10
Remove the parenthesis.
2
3x + x 10 = 0
Write the equation in standard
form.
(3x - 5) (x + 2) = 0 Factor

3x - 5 = 0 or x + 2= 0
for each unknown.
3x = 5

Equate each factor to 0. Then solve

or x = -2

x = 5/3
Checking:

For x = 5/3
x(3x + 1) = 10
5
5
(3
3
3 + 1)

()

= 10

5
3 ( 5 + 1) =

For x = - 2
x(3x + 1) = 10
-2 (3(-2)+ 1) =
10
-2 ( -6 + 1) = 10
-2 (-5) = 10
10 = 10
TRUE

Therefore
, the
roots/
solutions
are 5/3
and -2.
